Afienya: Rail Connection and Road Overpass
Accommodation in Afienya
Rail travel between Tema and Afienya
The Ghana Railway Development Authority lists passenger rail services between Tema Harbour and Afienya in both directions and provides timetables. Before planning a rail journey, check the latest service information and the timetable for your travel date. Pay attention to the direction of travel, departure station and day of travel. For your further planning, it is important to check whether the departure times offered fit your stay. Also check the return journey if you would like to travel back on the same day.
Road overpass and station
A 900-metre-long road overpass was inaugurated in Afienya on 6 December 2022. It was built as part of the 97.9-kilometre Tema–Mpakadan standard-gauge railway project. On the same date, then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo visited New Afienya station.
Afienya in the Tema–Mpakadan rail project
Afienya is one of six newly built stations on the Tema–Mpakadan Railway; Ghana’s 2024 budget document places it at route kilometre 20+300. The line also has stations in Ashaiman, Shai Hills, Doryumu-Kordiabe, Kpong and Juapong; two existing stations in Tema were renovated. The railway infrastructure also includes maintenance facilities, freight areas, and signalling and telecommunications technology. The railway line is intended to connect the Port of Tema with Mpakadan and Lake Volta, enabling passenger and freight services to connect further towards Buipe and northern Ghana. The 300-metre railway bridge over the Volta lies between Senchi and Old Akrade; it should not be confused with Afienya’s 900-metre road overpass. In September 2026, the Ministry of Transport reported that passenger services between Tema and Afienya had begun in October 2025. According to the same report, freight services were still being prepared; two diesel locomotives and 20 wagons had been procured for this purpose, while a transshipment facility on the lakeshore was being developed.
Stations and your journey
The budget report distinguishes the six newly built stations from the two renovated Tema Harbour and Tema Community 1 stations. So, if you want to use the Tema Harbour–Afienya connection, follow the station names in the current timetable. Choose your boarding point and destination based on the service actually offered. The stations along the overall project route do not guarantee that every train stops at every location mentioned.
