The North Region offers several starting points for planning a trip: its location between highland areas, the Bénoué watershed, and natural and cultural sites. If you are looking for a hotel, first decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay; you can then tailor your search to your preferred location.

Landscape and waterways

The North Region lies between the Adamaoua high plateaus and the Monts Mandara and corresponds to the Bénoué watershed. Its southern boundary is marked by the Falaise de l’Adamaoua and the escarpment of the Monts Alantika. In the north, the Plateaux du Tinguelin and the Massifs de Peské Bori and de Lam form the transition to the Monts Mandara. This brings together two distinct geographical relationships: a clearly marked southern boundary and a northern transition, while the watershed situates the region in relation to the Bénoué.

The climate also varies within the region: at higher elevations in the Monts Alantika and around Poli, it is cooler and wetter. The main tributaries of the Bénoué that do not dry up include the Faro, the Mayo Kebbi (also known as Mayo Kébi), and its tributary, the Mayo Louti. The water system can thus be viewed through both the main river and these tributaries.

The Lagdo Reservoir was built along the Bénoué. It has a capacity of 7.7 billion m³ and a flooded area of more than 697 km². Capacity and area describe different measurements and give an idea of the reservoir’s scale.

Protected areas and wildlife

Protected areas cover nearly 33% of the total area of the North Region. Animals found there include Derby eland, lion, leopard, hartebeest, kob, warthog, baboon, and buffalo. Fauna surveys in Bouba-Ndjidda National Park have recorded nearly 24 species of large and medium-sized mammals. Five of them are significant for conservation; examples include the savanna elephant, colobus monkey, African wild dog, and jackal.

Culture and notable places

In Rey-Bouba, the palace is a living place of memory and identity. It was built between 1805 and 1808 during the reign of NDJIDDA (1798–1866) and is also a living testament to the traditional craftsmanship of Doui or Dii artisans. The construction period falls within this reign.

The Kola Gorges offer a different kind of landscape: in the village of Kola, they form a spectacular rock formation above the bed of the Mayo-Louti River. In Lagdo, Lagon Bleu and Île aux Damans are designated leisure and recreation spots.
