Namibe: Travel Guide to the City and Province
Accommodation in Namibe
When looking for a hotel in Namibe, it is worth distinguishing between the city and the province: Parque Nacional do Iona is in Namibe Province, about 200 kilometers from the city of Namibe. The province’s landscapes and cultural sites offer a broader regional context than the city itself.
Iona National Park and its Coast
Parque Nacional do Iona covers 15,150 km² and lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cunene and Curoca rivers. Its coastline stretches for 150 kilometers and includes gulfs and river estuaries. Together, the coast and the shifting dunes of the Namibe coastal desert are considered one of the park’s most important tourist attractions.
The two figures describe different scales: 15,150 km² is the area of the entire national park, while 150 kilometers refers to its coastline. For regional orientation, the park therefore combines a large protected area with a long coastal zone. The distance of about 200 kilometers is between the park and the city of Namibe; it does not refer to travel time.
Coastal Landscapes and Activities
Lagoa dos Arcos is also in Namibe Province. It consists of three lagoons, the middle one being the best known. Its natural arches formed in the sandstone and gave the place its name. The three lagoons and sandstone arches make this natural attraction a distinct highlight alongside the coastal landscape of Iona Park.
Surfing is described along the coast of Namibe Province, with particular mention of the fishing village of Tômbua. According to tourism information, the waves are considered clean and long, and suitable for different experience levels—from beginners to advanced surfers. This is a general description of surfing along the provincial coast, not a statement about current conditions at a specific spot.
Cultural Heritage in Namibe Province
The province’s cultural sites range from archaeological locations to churches and museum collections. The Tchitundu-Hulu archaeological complex consists of three granite hills with several rock art sites. In the city of Moçâmedes, the Museu Provincial do Namibe houses permanent exhibitions on marine life, local history, prehistory, nature, and historical relics. The museum is also known as the Museu Regional do Namibe.
The Igreja Paroquial de Santo AdriĂŁo de Moçâmedes was built starting on July 27, 1849, and is considered Late Baroque. Moçâmedes was formerly the name of the province itself. BaĂa dos Tigres offers a different historical connection: it is regarded as the remains of a symbolic settlement from the colonization of southern Angola.
The Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes is in the fishing village of TĂ´mbwa in Namibe Province. It is dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, the patron saint of fishermen and navigators. Km 17 is also home to the grave of Rui Duarte de Carvalho, exactly 17 kilometers from the city of Moçâmedes. The site is a tourist stop on the way to the MunicĂpios of TĂ´mbua or Virei.
Distinguish the City from the Province When Looking for Hotels
For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish the city of Namibe as a search destination from the broader landscapes and cultural attractions of Namibe Province. Iona National Park, the coastal landscapes, and the cultural sites mentioned are regional points of reference; their respective distances and differing scales are important to understanding their context.
