Namibe Province brings natural and cultural heritage into sharp contrast: the vast Parque Nacional do Iona, rock art at Tchitundu-Hulu and historic sites in Moçâmedes. The province was formerly known as Moçâmedes. When planning your trip, you can give these themes different weight: natural landscapes, archaeological evidence or urban history. This can help you choose a hotel location based on the places that interest you most.

Atlantic Coast and Landscapes

Parque Nacional do Iona covers 15,150 km² and lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cunene and Curoca rivers. Its coastline stretches for 150 kilometres and includes gulfs and river mouths. The park’s area gives a sense of its scale; the length of its coastline offers a more precise reference for its maritime landscape. Salojamba and Ponte Albina are counted among the places in the park with the highest tourist numbers.

Lagoa dos Arcos in Namibe Province offers a different natural attraction. It consists of three lagoons; the central one is best known for its arches, naturally formed in the sandstone. The place was named after these arches. Visitors interested in how landscapes are formed will find a clearly defined feature here: it is the arches of the central lagoon, not all three lagoons, that give the place its name.

Rock Art, Collections and Architectural History

The Tchitundu-Hulu archaeological complex in Namibe Province consists of three granite hills with several rock art sites. The combination of multiple hills and archaeological sites makes the complex a cultural heritage site spread across a distinct area. It offers a cultural focus different from the collections and historic buildings in Moçâmedes.

The Museu Provincial do Namibe, also known as the Museu Regional do Namibe, is located in Moçâmedes. Its permanent exhibitions cover marine life, local history, prehistory, nature and historical relics. The subjects therefore range from nature to the history of the town and its surroundings. You can consider the range of collections alongside the city’s architectural history to find what best suits your interests.

The Igreja Paroquial de Santo Adrião de Moçâmedes was built starting on 27 July 1849 and is described as late Baroque. The start of construction and the architectural classification offer two different perspectives on the church: its place in time and its style. Together with the museum, it gives Moçâmedes a cultural theme that brings collections and architectural history together.

Surfing and Other Named Places

Surfing along the coast of Namibe Province is described as a seasonal activity, with the fishing village of TĂ´mbua receiving particular attention. The waves are described as clean and long, and suitable for different skill levels, from beginners to advanced surfers. Salojamba and Ponte Albina are among the places in Parque Nacional do Iona cited as having some of the highest tourist numbers.

The grave of Rui Duarte de Carvalho is another named stop in the region. It is located at Km 17, exactly 17 kilometres from the city of Moçâmedes, and is considered a tourist stop on the way to Município Tômbua or Virei. This location adds a specific cultural heritage theme to the surfing focus around Tômbua, but it is a separate point of interest from the coastal description.

When looking for a hotel location, you can weigh these places against one another: the museum and church are in Moçâmedes, while Parque Nacional do Iona is about 200 kilometres from the city of Namibe. If your trip includes both the city’s history and the park, factor in the approximate distance as you plan and decide which focus you want to spend more time on.
