Kwanza-Sul: Beaches, Waterfalls and Culture
Accommodation in Kwanza-Sul
Kwanza-Sul combines beaches and rivers with waterfalls, healing waters and cultural sites in Sumbe. Natural attractions are spread across several municipalities, while several of the cultural sites visited are in Sumbe. When planning your trip, it helps to first choose your focus: beach, nature or culture. This makes it easier to balance the different themes when planning your stay.
Beaches and River Landscapes
Kicombo, Carimba and Chiculcua beaches, as well as the beach at Rio Tapado in Sumbe, are considered suitable for swimming. Check local conditions before swimming. The Longa, Cubal, Queve and Cambongo rivers are considered suitable for water sports, navigation and sport fishing. At the water, you can choose between swimming and the various river activities.
Waterfalls and Healing Waters
The Caculo Cabaça waterfalls in the municipality of Libolo are considered places of tourist interest. The Cachoeiras do Binga are located on the Keve River in the municipality of Conda; Kilenda is home to waterfalls more than 150 metres high. Each waterfall destination therefore has a different point of interest: the tourist appeal of Caculo Cabaça, Binga’s location on the Keve, and the height of the waterfalls in Kilenda.
The thermal and healing waters of Tokota are in Conda; the healing waters of Catanda are in Seles. The healing waters of Waco are also considered a natural attraction in Angola’s Kwanza-Sul Province. Together with the waterfalls and rivers, they add other named water destinations to the region’s natural attractions.
Culture and Events in Sumbe
Sumbe has its own cultural character. During organized visits for National Culture Day celebrations, a group of visitors toured the Fortaleza in the municipality of Sumbe. Vasco da Gama and Largo dos Pescadores in Sumbe were also visited as part of organized trips for these celebrations. The ruins of Fortim do Kicombo are also in Sumbe. This makes Sumbe a cultural destination alongside the region’s beach and river activities.
According to reports, the Ulu Upe beach festival brought thousands of people to the Marginal do Sumbe on Friday, September 27, to mark the 107th anniversary of Cuanza-Sul Province. The Cuanza-Sul Music Festival was scheduled to take place at the Marginal do Sumbe from September 19 to 21, 2025.
Choose a Hotel Location Based on Your Travel Interests
