In Waukesha County, expansive parklands meet paved recreational trails, forest paths, and attractions for culture enthusiasts. The Waukesha County Park System covers 8,500 acres of natural areas, lakes, ponds, and waterways. If you want to spend time outdoors, you’ll find a variety of options here, from walks through wetlands to longer routes across hilly terrain.

Parks, Forests, and Wildlife Viewing

Retzer Nature Center spans 483 acres of prairies, woodlands, wetlands, gardens, and wildlife habitats. Along the trails, you can watch birds or take in the night sky. The Discovery Trail combines exploration stations with environmental education, sensory play, and STEM activities for families and school groups. It is accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Oak and hickory forests and dense undergrowth shape the trails at Naga-Waukee Park, home to many wildlife species. The 208-acre grounds feature open spaces, scenic trails, and views of Nagawicka Lake. Fox River Park offers a different landscape, with old-growth forests, wetlands, and wildflowers. In summer, hikers, cyclists, and inline skaters use its paved trails.

Trails with Different Routes and Terrain

The county’s recreational trail network includes more than 35 miles of paved paths. The 15-mile Lake Country Trail follows the former Milwaukee-Watertown Interurban Railway. Hilly terrain and views of the Central Kettle Moraine region characterize this route. The shorter, three-mile Fox River Trail runs through wetlands and woodlands between Pewaukee and Brookfield.

At Lapham Peak, glacial terrain and illuminated trails offer opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing. A 45-foot observation tower stands at the highest point in Waukesha County, 1,233 feet above sea level. Another option there is the 1.8-mile Pine Grove Path Trail, a firm, universally accessible route through prairie and forest.

Thirty miles of the Ice Age Trail run through the Southern Unit of Kettle Moraine State Forest. The John Muir Bike Trails also offer mountain biking: five rugged singletrack loops ranging from 1.25 to 12 miles long. Parking, water, and vault toilets are available. The different trail lengths give you a concrete guide for planning your outing; the terrain and activities also differ from those on the county network’s paved trails.

Outings in Different Seasons

Minooka Park has a swimming beach, a pond, and miles of forest trails. Mountain bikers can use designated singletrack trails totaling 5.1 miles, with routes for different skill levels. In winter, the activities change: groomed cross-country ski trails and a large sledding hill are available. Fox River Park, by contrast, is particularly noted as a destination for summer use of its paved trails.

Water skiing and sailing are possible on Pewaukee Lake, with ice sailing available in winter. If you plan to visit Waukesha County parks or lake access points, note the requirement for each vehicle: an annual membership or a daily permit is required. Check this requirement before driving into the areas in question.

Culture and Visits by Appointment

In downtown Waukesha, the GuitarTown walking tour leads to murals and artistically decorated guitars that stand ten feet tall. In Pewaukee, you can take a self-guided tour of 26 historic sites, including theaters and long-established homes. The Waukesha County Historical Society & Museum preserves and shares the county’s cultural heritage.

Cozy Nook Farm offers another perspective on regional agriculture. From spring through fall, educational tours of the dairy farm are available by appointment. The tour lasts one hour; children can feed hay to the heifers and pet calves. Since visits require an appointment, arrange yours with the farm in advance. This makes it easy to plan this activity into your stay.
