Vilas County: Bog Landscapes, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Vilas County
Powell Marsh Wildlife Area shows the diversity of nature in Vilas County: The area covers about 4,303 acres and contains a large peat bog with several unique wetland and plant communities. More than 213 different bird species have been observed there so far; additional documented observations may increase the total. At the north end, the area has an observation point, and there are four designated parking areas on the grounds. The landscape and the observed diversity of birds offer different perspectives on the area.
Wetlands, Lakes and Trails
Wabasso Lake offers a different natural feature: This 49-acre, deep seepage lake has diverse and unusual aquatic plant life. In contrast to the expansive peat bog, the focus here is on a single lake and its plant life. Both descriptions show different sides of the natural areas without reducing them to the same habitat.
Both the season and the choice of activity matter on the WinMan Trails. They span more than 1,300 acres of private and public land in northwest Vilas County and are open year-round. In winter, they are suited to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking; in the other seasons, to hiking and mountain biking. Vilas County also has 700 miles of snowmobile trails and nearly 90 designated multi-use trails. Trail mileage may change as the network is updated.
Directions to individual natural attractions are also described in practical terms. Van Vliet Hemlocks has a parking lot and a trailhead on East Van Vliet Road. As road conditions can vary, it is worth checking them before setting out. The Rice Creek area lies between Round Lake and Big Lake; boat access is via Round Lake Road. Another road connection in the county, Rustic Road 60, connects County Highway M south of Boulder Junction with County Highway K/N in Star Lake. It is the only official Rustic Road in Vilas County.
Your own travel plans remain the guiding factor: for example, whether seasonal trail offerings, a natural area or a cultural highlight will shape your stay.
Cultural History in Museums
The George W. Brown, Jr. Ojibwe Museum & Cultural Center presents the history of Lac Du Flambeau through one of the most comprehensive collections on the area's history. Offerings include seasonal workshops, interactive exhibits, cultural programs and a world-record sturgeon. Workshops and exhibits may change seasonally, so check the current program before visiting. Tours are offered to groups of five or more by prior arrangement. Confirm the current arrangements with the museum before your visit.
The Vilas County Historical Museum offers another perspective on the region's past. Founded in 1959, it displays historic artifacts, photographs and memorabilia related to the history of Vilas County and the surrounding areas. The exhibits include the original snowmobile, built in 1924. The museum thus highlights both the county's development and a specific historical object.
