Port Washington: Lighthouse, Trail, and Harbor
Accommodation in Port Washington
Port Washington offers several distinct ways to shape a stay: the paved Ozaukee Interurban Trail, the lighthouse on Lake Michigan, historical exhibits, and seasonal fishing opportunities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Port Washington, you can plan your trip around whether you’d like to spend time on the trail, by the water, or exploring maritime history. Charter availability can vary, so check before making plans.
Trail and Activities Throughout the Year
The 30-mile paved Ozaukee Interurban Trail runs through Port Washington. It is designated for year-round biking, inline skating, walking, running, and cross-country skiing, offering a choice of ways to get active on the same named trail. Cross-country skiing is also among its year-round uses, extending the range of activities beyond the warmer months. The trail is also designated as a “Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail.” This designation adds a nature theme to its role as a route for a variety of activities.
For a different view of Lake Michigan, Upper Lake Park offers elevated views, with stairs leading to North Beach. The park thus combines lake views with access to the beach via the specified stairs. Possibility Playground offers a different focus: it is designed so children of all abilities can play together. If you’re traveling with children, you can consider this playground as a specific stop; its design centers on playing together.
Lighthouse and Maritime History
Port Washington Breakwater Lighthouse stands at the end of the north breakwater on the shore of Lake Michigan. It’s a destination for a walk along the lakeshore, was recently restored, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The present lighthouse, dating from 1860, replaced the first lighthouse, built in 1849. The dates therefore refer to two different structures: 1849 for its predecessor and 1860 for the present lighthouse.
The 1860 Light Station grounds include the lighthouse; the museum rooms are in the station buildings. There, rooms are furnished in the style of the Lewis family, who served as lighthouse keepers from 1874 to 1934. The station also houses exhibits from the local history museum. The former watch house and generator building contain maritime and local memorabilia, along with historical artifacts. For a history-focused stay, this makes it possible to explore the lighthouse’s history and the station’s exhibits as distinct but related topics.
Charters and Seasonal Fishing
Fishing and diving charters operate from Port Washington Marina. C & D Charters offers one-day fishing trips lasting 4 to 8 hours, as well as multi-day package trips lasting 8 to 15 hours. These time ranges give you a specific point of comparison when deciding between a one-day trip and a multi-day package; charter availability can vary.
The season is another factor to consider when planning. In May and June, Coho salmon, Chinook salmon, and steelhead are caught in Lake Michigan; from July to October, the lake’s large king salmon are caught. The two time periods differ in the fish species mentioned and can help you choose when to travel based on your interest in fishing.
