Whitefish Bay: Parks and Local History
Accommodation in Whitefish Bay
Whitefish Bay brings together lakeside parks on Lake Michigan and local history. Park access varies, and a self-guided walking tour takes you through several neighborhoods. If you’re looking for a hotel in Whitefish Bay, these interests can provide a common thread for planning your stay.
Lakeside Parks and Beach Access
Klode Park is on the shore of Lake Michigan. A path leads down the lakeside bluff to the beach. Buckley Park is also on the lakefront; there, a paved walkway leads to the beach. If beach access is important to your plans, you can choose between the path down from the bluff edge at Klode Park and the paved walkway at Buckley Park.
Silver Spring Park is at the eastern end of East Silver Spring Drive. Its overlook offers striking views of Lake Michigan. The three parks offer different features: beach access via a path down the bluff, a paved walkway to the beach, or an overlook. The Village of Whitefish Bay has a total of ten neighborhood parks.
An 1889 Resort
In 1889, Captain Frederick Pabst, one of Milwaukee’s beer barons, built a resort in Whitefish Bay. It was north of present-day Henry Clay Street, east of Lake Drive, and south of Silver Spring Drive. Up to 10,000 people visited the resort on a summer day. Attractions at the time included a view, a Ferris wheel, rowboats, and outdoor movies.
Music and food were also part of the historic resort: concerts were held daily, with double concerts on Sundays. Dishes made with whitefish, caught in the bay every day, were served. These details tell the story of a late-19th-century destination; they are part of the resort’s history.
Walking Tour and Cultural Notes
A self-guided walking tour passes through the Wilshire, Cumberland Forest, and Lake Drive neighborhoods in southeastern Whitefish Bay. The route is about 2.85 miles long and ends near its starting point. Its length and endpoint can help you plan this walk.
Every fall, hundreds of carved pumpkins are displayed in Schoolhouse Park around Halloween. The Whitefish Bay Veterans Monument and Memorial Garden is located in Armory Park. The highest concentration of medallions is along historic East Day Avenue. These different places and seasonal themes offer various ways to explore local history.
