Explore Rosendale as you plan your trip around local history and nature trails. The Rosendale Historical Society Museum, Peony Gardens, Mascoutin Valley State Trail, and Northwoods Park each offer a different perspective on the area. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider whether architectural and craft history, garden features, or trails through forests and wetlands should be your focus.

Local History at Grange Hall

The Rosendale Historical Society Museum is located in the old Grange Hall west of the intersection of Highways 23 and 26. The building was constructed in 1891 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. From 1908 to 1941, Chauncey Nellis operated a harness shop in the building. He made harnesses, repaired leather, and did some carpentry work. As a result, the building’s history and its use for crafts belong to different periods in the area’s history. For travelers interested in the local past, the special focus is both on the building’s origins and on the craft practiced there later.

Garden Features with Historical Continuity

The Peony Gardens offer a different kind of historical continuity. The windmill and entrance gate were built in 1929 and remain unchanged to this day. In addition, most of the peonies are still from the original garden. Thus, both preserved structural features and plants with historical continuity are part of the Gardens’ character. Unlike Grange Hall, the focus here is not on a workshop but on garden features and plantings. The area’s history thus includes garden heritage alongside memories of buildings and crafts.

Mascoutin Valley State Trail

The eastern section of the Mascoutin Valley State Trail begins in Rosendale at State Highway 26 and runs east to the city of Fond du Lac. This gives the trail a clear direction and destination. Parking is available along the roads and at Taylor Park in Rosendale. No state trail pass is required for the Mascoutin Valley State Trail. If you include the trail in your trip plans, you can use its starting point, its direction toward Fond du Lac, and the listed parking options as guides.

Forests and Wetlands at Northwoods Park

Northwoods Park offers a different landscape. This 35-acre undeveloped woodland is located within the Town of Rosendale. Its approximately 1.5 miles of hiking trails pass through deciduous forests and wetlands. The park can therefore be described by its area, trail length, and two landscape types, while the Mascoutin Valley State Trail is defined by its route toward Fond du Lac. This distinction can be helpful when deciding between a trail with a named destination and hiking trails through forests and wetlands. Check local conditions and access details for Northwoods Park before your trip.
