Rainier: Trail, Parks, and Local History
Accommodation in Rainier
Rainier offers three specific themes to help you plan your trip: the Yelm-Rainier-Tenino Trail, city parks, and the history of the Rainier Historical Church. The town is located on Highway 507 between Tenino and Yelm. If you’re looking for a hotel in Rainier, these highlights can help you plan around the activities and places that interest you. The trail connects communities across the southern part of Thurston County; the parks and church offer other specific destinations in Rainier.
Trail and Getting Around Rainier
The Yelm-Rainier-Tenino Trail is 14.5 miles long and paved. It runs east to west through the southern part of Thurston County, connecting Yelm, Rainier, Tenino, Tumwater, Lacey, Olympia, and Woodard Bay on Puget Sound. The route extends beyond Rainier and includes several communities.
At the Rainier trail access point, there is a paved parking area behind Rainier Market, at the corner of Minnesota Street and Rochester Street. A paved path along the back edge of Rainier Veterans Memorial Park connects the park to the Yelm-Rainier-Tenino Trail, which in turn connects to the Chehalis-Western Trail. These are two different reference points for getting your bearings: at the Market access point, look for the intersection and parking area; at Memorial Park, look for the paved connecting path.
Parks and Memorial
The three parks offer different amenities: Wilkowski Park has a playground, Gehrke Park has play equipment for children, and Raintree Park has a basketball court. If you’re looking for a specific amenity, note the name of the park. Park amenities can change, so check what’s available before your visit if needed.
Rainier Veterans Memorial Park honors military veterans, members of the police and fire services, and everyone else who has served their community, county, state, or country. The park may interest visitors looking for a memorial or wanting to learn about the different forms of service honored by its dedication.
Public restrooms are available at City Hall; restrooms at Wilkowski Park are available seasonally. Keep this seasonal limitation in mind when planning a visit to the park.
Rainier Historical Church and Local History
Rainier Historical Church is also known as Rainier School and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Brothers Albert, Theodore, and Paul Gehrke built it in 1896. Originally, the building served as both a second school and a church. This dual use brings together Rainier’s educational and religious history in one building. In 2007, the church became Rainier’s first historic structure to be added to the Washington State Heritage Register.
Rainier Historical Church can be rented for weddings or other special events. If you’re planning to use the building for an event, confirm the arrangements before your visit.
Event Date
A parade was scheduled for Saturday, August 22, at the 2026 Rainier Roundup Days. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the relevant dates before making plans, as future dates may change.
