Maltby: History, Market and Park
Accommodation in Maltby
Maltby offers several distinct reasons to visit: the history of a club and its buildings, the offerings at the Produce Market at Flower World, and the walking trail, picnic facilities, and grassy sports fields at Maltby Community Park. The history of Maltby Community Church and the monthly Maltby Bluegrass Jam are also part of the picture. This makes it easier to decide early in your travel planning whether local history, a market visit, or time in the park best matches your interests.
Club and Building History
The history of the Maltby Community Club began in 1932, when a small group of locals founded it. The current building was constructed seven years later, in 1939, as a square-dance hall. Its construction followed a fire that destroyed the original building. The seven years between the club’s founding and the construction of the current building thus mark two different stages in the club’s history.
The Maltby Bluegrass Jam takes place at the Maltby Community Club on the first Saturday of every month. If you’d like to include the jam in your trip, check whether your stay coincides with that Saturday before making plans.
Maltby Community Church is also part of the town’s history: it was founded in 1903. At the Maltby Cafe, the building’s history and ownership take center stage. The cafe is located on the lower level of an old schoolhouse, built in 1937 as a gymnasium and cafeteria for the neighboring school, which had been built in 1907. These sites offer different historical perspectives: a founding year for the church and club, and a connection to a former use for the cafe.
The current ownership of the Maltby Cafe began with a purchase that was completed in June 1988. The purchase date adds a later chapter to the building’s history: it marks the beginning of the current ownership, while 1937 dates the schoolhouse and its former use.
Market Visit with Animal Farm
The Produce Market at Flower World offers locally grown fruit, vegetables, and herbs, as well as cider, vinegar, and wine. The market also includes an animal farm with ducks, peacocks, sheep, chickens, and goats; visitors can walk around the farm with children. The selection of goods and the animal farm offer two different focuses for a visit. For visitors with children, taking a walk around the animal farm together is another option.
Walking Trail and Sports at Maltby Community Park
Maltby Community Park offers a walking trail, picnic facilities, and grassy sports fields. The park accommodates different activities: walking along the trail, taking a break at the picnic facilities, or playing sports on the grassy fields. So the park is more than just a place for a walk; picnicking and sports are other activities in their own right. If you’re planning a visit to the park, you can choose among these different options.
