Goldendale: Observatory, Regional History and Parks
Accommodation in Goldendale
Goldendale offers three distinct reasons to visit: astronomy at the Goldendale Observatory State Park Heritage Site, regional history at the Presby Museum, and time outdoors in city parks. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, first consider which interest will shape your itinerary. Then take into account the relevant requirements: a required reservation, seasonal hours, or park amenities.
Observatory and Visit Planning
The Goldendale Observatory State Park Heritage Site is home to one of the largest public telescopes in the United States. Live telescope images are shown during all observatory programs, weather permitting. Both the program and weather conditions must be suitable for these images to be shown. Check the current park notice before you travel, as program availability may change. A reservation is required to enter the visitor center and/or observatory; the park grounds are open to visitors. Panoramic views of the landscape are available from all areas of the park. Live telescope images show the sky, while panoramic views show the landscape.
Presby Museum: Season and Regional History
Presby Mansion is home to the Presby Museum. From May 1 to October 15, the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; check that your visit date falls within this seasonal period before traveling. The Klickitat County Historical Society’s primary purpose is to collect, preserve, and present the history of Goldendale and Klickitat County. Its mission therefore encompasses both Goldendale’s history and the county’s broader regional context.
The ground floor of Presby Mansion, the annex, and the schoolhouse are accessible. A lift to the ground floor of Presby Mansion is available at the rear. If these access provisions are important for your visit, check the details before traveling.
Compare City Parks by Amenities
Ekone Park offers restrooms, two softball fields, picnic areas, picnic tables, a pavilion, a playground, and access to a creek. World War II Park offers restrooms, a tennis court, a basketball court, a large lawn, a playground, and two parking areas. You can compare the different sports facilities and picnic options; both parks have restrooms and a playground. As municipal park amenities may change, check the conditions before your visit.
The visit requirements answer different planning questions: At the Presby Museum, the season, days of the week, and hours determine the visiting window. At the observatory, the reservation requirement and weather-dependent live images are separate considerations. For the parks, the focus is on comparing sports and picnic amenities. This lets you consider timing requirements and the park amenities you want separately as you plan your trip.
