Bells Beach can be understood through its shoreline formation, local history, and specific accommodation features. Access to the beach is also important when planning your trip: on the peninsula that includes Bells Beach, Beverly Beach, and Baby Island Heights, there is no public access to a beach. Check local access rules if a beach visit is part of your stay. When weighing up the destination, distinguish this access information from the question of which room and breakfast features matter to you. A 2025 planning assessment also identifies a need for shoreline access in areas around Baby Island and Bells Beach.

Shoreline formation and beach access

Bells Beach is classified as a low-lying depositional beach section. The technical term refers to a shoreline formation shaped by deposition; “low-lying” adds to the geomorphological classification. The description therefore relates to the shape of the shoreline. Together, the classification and access note provide two different points of reference: the coastal formation on the one hand, and the question of public beach access on the other.

Local history

Winnie Bell and her sisters were known throughout South Whidbey as the “Bells Beach Girls.” This nickname places their story in a broader local context than the name Bells Beach alone. In another historical episode, John McLeod helped Dave Bell alter the shoreline along Saratoga Passage by flushing it out and develop Bells Beach. Two different connections are presented here: the name and renown of the sisters, and the alteration of the shoreline. Flooding is also part of Bells Beach’s past.

Whale watching and B&B

On March 24, 2003, three gray whales were sighted off Bells Beach while feeding and heading toward Langley. This was a single historical event, not a reliable time to expect a sighting during your trip. Guests at Bell's Beach B&B can watch whales from the terrace, among other things; however, an encounter is not guaranteed. These are two different nature-related points of interest: a dated sighting and an opportunity for guests at the accommodation.

Features to consider when looking for accommodation

Bell's Beach B&B offers a private suite with a queen bed, private bathroom, and cozy living area. A continental breakfast with coffee, tea, and muffins is offered when you rent a room. The B&B also offers views of the Cascade Mountains. These details provide different points of comparison: the suite, bed, bathroom, and living area relate to the private space; breakfast to dining, and the view to the scenery. You can weigh the features according to your own priorities.
