Westport offers several highlights for a stay: miles of beaches, coastal dunes, maritime history, and activities on the water. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether beach time, a paved coastal trail, or historic sites should be the deciding factor. This lets you plan your trip around the interests that matter most to you.

Beaches and Trails Through the Coastal Dunes

Westport’s miles of beaches offer room for walks, beachcombing, and whale watching. The Westport area also has miles of beach where you can razor clam, with access on foot or by car. There are also opportunities nearby to catch Dungeness crab and red rock crab. Seasons and regulations for razor clamming and crabbing can change. Check the current rules before planning either activity.

Westport Light State Park is a day-use park; it covers 560 acres and has 1,215 feet of shoreline. The Westport Light Trail offers a different perspective on the coastal dunes: it is paved and ADA-accessible, and runs approximately halfway into Westhaven State Park. This gives you a choice between a day-use park with shoreline and a paved trail through the dunes as different ways to experience nature.

Maritime History and Westport Marina

Westport’s Marina District is home to the Westport Maritime Museum, which is housed in a five-building complex. The complex was formerly a U.S. Coast Guard station. The main building houses the maritime collection; the exhibits focus on the maritime history of the South Beach. Grays Harbor Lighthouse adds to this theme: at 107 feet, it is the tallest lighthouse in Washington State. The museum and lighthouse offer different highlights—exhibits on South Beach history on the one hand, and a state height record on the other.

Westport Marina District has public facilities for accessing the water. The winter King Tides can be observed from the Westport Marina Observation Tower; conditions for viewing vary. Buying seafood is another option in the area: visitors can buy fresh, locally caught seafood directly from Westport fishermen or at Westport fish markets. The availability of individual markets may change; check before your visit.

Surfing and Fishing

Westport offers three major surf breaks for all skill levels. The charter fleet offers fishing trips for salmon, halibut, rockfish, lingcod, and albacore tuna. Which of these species are available on trips varies by season and regulations. The two activities differ significantly when planning your day: surfing centers on the surf breaks and your skill level, while charter fishing depends on the seasonal, regulation-based selection of fish species.

Planning Your Stay in Westport

Some activities are explicitly tied to a season or changing conditions: King Tides are a winter phenomenon, and razor clamming, crabbing, and charter fishing are affected by seasons and regulations. If one of these activities is key to your trip, check the applicable conditions in advance.
