Duffield: Trail, Railroad History, and Music
Accommodation in Duffield
Duffield combines local cultural sites and a trail in town with attractions in nearby Natural Tunnel State Park. If you’re looking for a hotel in Duffield, it’s helpful to distinguish between activities in town and attractions in the surrounding area: the Fannon Railroad Museum and the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Interpretive Center are in Duffield; the state park is a separate destination nearby.
Trail Options and Routes
The Fraley Avenue Trail starts in a residential neighborhood in Duffield, climbs gently over Powell Mountain to Kane Gap, and is just under two miles long. It’s suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Nearby Natural Tunnel State Park has eight trails ranging in length from one-tenth of a mile to just over a mile; three of them are also suitable for bicycles. This gives you a choice between one longer trail and several shorter park trails. Access details for the Fraley Avenue Trail, as well as trail conditions and availability in the park, may change.
Natural Tunnel: Geology and Activities
Natural Tunnel itself is more than 850 feet long and as tall as a ten-story building. It formed naturally through a limestone ridge over thousands of years. Visitors can reach the tunnel by hiking trail or chairlift. On fall weekends, the chairlift offers a particularly scenic view of the tunnel; check its availability before your trip. The park also offers cave tours and canoe trips on the Clinch River.
Museums and Regional History
The Fannon Railroad Museum depot contains railroad photographs, lanterns, whistles, and timetables. The Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Interpretive Center is also in Duffield, is an off-site location of Natural Tunnel State Park, and includes a museum. In the nearby park, the Log Cabin Trail leads to the Carter Log Cabin and intersects with the Tunnel Trail. The cabin was once associated with the Carter Family, known for its music. The Wilderness Road Blockhouse in the park is a replica of blockhouses occupied by the Holston militia during the frontier conflict between Indigenous peoples and settlers. As broader regional context, the Clinch River historically served as an important settlement route, opening up areas in southwestern Virginia, as well as in Tennessee and Kentucky.
Music Events in the Park
The Papa Joe Smiddy Mountain Music Festival takes place at 3 p.m. on every Sunday of Labor Day weekend in the Natural Tunnel State Park amphitheater. Check that year’s program before your trip. The Pickin’ in the Park series takes place on Sundays during the summer in the park; check the schedule for your travel year as well.
Directions and Similar-Sounding Names
From Duffield, drive four miles south on Route 23 to the Natural Tunnel State Park sign at mile marker 17.4. Turn left there and follow Natural Tunnel Parkway about one mile east to the park entrance. The park is on the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail driving tour; the Fraley Avenue Trail was formerly called the Daniel Boone Trail. The similar names refer to different offerings here: a trail and a driving tour.
