Natural Bridge: Natural Arch, Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Natural Bridge
Natural Bridge combines a striking natural arch with trails, caverns and a variety of natural and historical themes. At Natural Bridge State Park, you’ll find trails and exhibits, among other things; the Caverns at Natural Bridge focus specifically on geology. To plan your trip, you can organize the options by interest: scenery and views, the world of caverns, Monacan history or an evening program.
Natural Arch, Gorge and History
Natural Bridge is a 200-foot-tall natural arch in a limestone gorge carved out by Cedar Creek. The creek is therefore an integral part of this natural area’s geological description. A specific historical date is also part of the area’s history: Thomas Jefferson bought Natural Bridge from King George III of England in 1774. The natural formation and historical record offer different perspectives on the same place.
Trails, Waterfall and Activities
The Cedar Creek Trail passes beneath Natural Bridge and is also used to access Lace Falls. The waterfall is 50 feet tall. The Blue Ridge Trail offers a different focus: views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains. The named trails thus differ in their stated highlights: the natural arch and waterfall on one hand, and views of two mountain ranges on the other.
If you’re looking for another activity in addition to hiking, the Thistle Ridge Disc Golf Trail has an 18-hole disc golf course for players of all skill levels. The Children's Discovery Area includes the Kids in Parks Track Trail and the certified Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom. The Safari Drive-Thru in Natural Bridge offers another way to see animals: visitors can view and feed animals at close range from their vehicle.
Cave Tours and Nature Watching
The Caverns at Natural Bridge offer 45-minute guided tours that explain Earth’s history and geology. Visitors can also see rare geological formations such as boxwork and stress fractures. The caverns are also home to cave salamanders and several bat species, which are often seen during tours. The Caverns thus showcase both rock formations and the wildlife that lives there. If you plan to take a tour, check the current times and booking conditions in advance.
Monacan History and Exhibits
An 18th-century Monacan living history exhibit has been reconstructed at Natural Bridge State Park. The Monacan Indian Living History Exhibit offers a 45-minute tour covering the culture of the Monacan Indians, the effects of European settlers and trade goods on the lives of Indigenous Americans, and the importance of archaeology in studying past cultures. The exhibit includes a wigwam, a longhouse, a cooking area, a men’s work cabin and a trading post. The tour thus brings together cultural history and archaeology; the buildings and areas mentioned provide additional specific points of interest for visitors.
The park’s visitor center features the Base Camp, with exhibits on the region’s natural, historical and cultural heritage. This lets you look beyond individual trails and attractions to explore a range of regional themes.
Evening Events and Directions
After dark, Natural Bridge State Park offers ranger-led stargazing programs and lantern tours beneath Natural Bridge; schedules may change. The Illumination of the Bridge takes place on the last Saturday evening of each month from April through October. Check the specific dates before your trip.
Natural Bridge State Park is accessible from I-81 via exits 175 or 180A, then U.S. 11. Check travel conditions before setting out. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Natural Bridge, you can first decide whether nature experiences, cave tours or cultural history will shape your stay. The range of themes and formats can help you choose the focus of your trip without limiting the options to just one kind of visit.
