In Prince William, forests, water, and history offer distinct themes for outings. In Prince William Forest Park, trails wind through secondary forest; elsewhere, the Potomac, lakes, and historic sites shape the landscape. Choosing which of these themes to focus on can give your planning direction.

Forests, Water, and Trails

Most of Prince William Forest Park is in Prince William County, Virginia. The park covers 15,000 acres of secondary forest and has 37 miles of hiking trails along both branches of Quantico Creek. Because trail conditions and access can change seasonally, check them before your hike. If you prefer shorter routes or want to explore other landscapes, you’ll find additional trails in the region’s parks.

Leesylvania State Park in Prince William County sits on the tidally influenced banks of the historic Potomac River. Lake Ridge Park offers public access to the Occoquan Water Trail. Lake Ridge Golf Course also has a 9-hole, par-3 course, and the marina offers boat rentals during three seasons. The water trail, golf, and boat rentals provide different reasons to visit.

At Silver Lake Regional Park, Little Bull Run Stream feeds a 23-acre lake. Shore fishing and non-motorized boats are permitted on the lake; the combination of the lake and four miles of multi-use trails for hikers and horseback riders also lets you focus your visit on the trails. The eight-acre pond at Locust Shade Park is stocked with trout and catfish. The park also has 3.2 miles of scenic nature trails. The Jean C. Smith Amphitheater offers family entertainment in late spring and summer.

Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park brings history and nature together: the site includes more than 2.7 miles of walking and horseback riding trails. Its fields, woodlands, and ponds support diverse wildlife. The trails and landscape appeal to different interests, so you don’t have to limit your visit to just one kind of activity.

Experience Local History

The Battles of Manassas also provide historical context for the region: the first took place on July 21, 1861, at Manassas National Battlefield Park, and the second in August 1862. Bull Run Monument, one of the earliest Civil War monuments in the United States, stands on Henry Hill. The Revolutionary War History Trail connects twelve designated sites in Prince William and Manassas, Virginia; its content may be updated for the 2026 commemoration. The Civil War History Trail includes more than 25 designated sites across the wider Greater Prince William area.

For a visit focused on specific places, access arrangements are also important: Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre provides visitors with disabilities with tablets for virtual 360-degree tours. Visits to Barnes House are available by appointment and during special events and programs.

Plan Your Trip

When choosing a hotel location, it helps to first decide which outings matter most to you: trails, water activities, or historic sites offer different focuses. More than 20 miles of the East Coast Greenway run through Prince William County, mostly on roads along the Route 1 corridor. The route may change as additional sections are developed, so check the current route before your trip. The Virginia Railway Express connects Prince William County by rail to Washington, D.C.; check the schedule before traveling.

If you’re interested in regional beverages, consider including the Steins, Vines, and Moonshine Trail in your plans. It includes breweries, wineries, and distilleries throughout Prince William County; participating businesses may change. Along with forest, water, and history destinations, this offers another way to tailor your trip to your interests.
