Orange County is in Virginia’s Piedmont region, near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Rolling hills, views, and sunsets shape the landscape. The region also offers several distinct ways to explore its history: from a museum of American history and Civil War sites to historic buildings in Orange and Gordonsville. Marked hiking trails and cycling routes add ways to include the landscape in your trip planning alongside these cultural themes.

History and Trails Around Montpelier

James Madison’s Montpelier is a memorial to James Madison and the enslaved community, a museum of American history, and a center for civic education about the Constitution. This makes the site a starting point for exploring different historical perspectives. More than eight miles of marked hiking trails wind through horse pastures, wildflower meadows, and woodlands. When planning a visit, be sure to follow Montpelier’s visitor guidelines.

The 3.9-mile Montpelier-Grelen Trail offers a direct connection between cultural and landscape themes. It crosses Chicken Mountain and connects Montpelier’s trail network with the Grelen Nursery trail network. In 2015, the trail was designated a “Virginia Treasure” in recognition of its outstanding contribution to conservation, cultural heritage, and public outdoor recreation. For access, please follow Montpelier’s visitor guidelines and check operating conditions at Montpelier and The Market at Grelen. The figure of more than eight miles refers to Montpelier’s trail network; 3.9 miles, by contrast, describes this specific connecting trail.

Civil War History at Wilderness Battlefield

The Battle of the Wilderness lasted two days in May 1864. The Wilderness Battlefield Driving Tour follows the numbered stops on the park map. As route details may be updated, it’s a good idea to check the map when planning. If you’d rather explore a hiking route than take a driving tour, Wilderness Battlefield has the Federal Line Trail: the 7.2-mile loop follows the Union line and passes earthworks and artillery positions. These two formats offer distinct ways to engage with the site: the driving tour’s stops or a clearly defined walking loop.

Historic Buildings in Orange and Gordonsville

The Orange Commercial Historic District includes Orange’s oldest public, religious, and commercial buildings. The commercial buildings showcase architectural styles that were common in the United States from the 1830s through the 1940s. Many of the buildings are privately owned or can be viewed from public walkways. The district’s history can therefore also be explored through its architecture and the different periods in which its buildings were constructed, without assuming that every building is open to the public. St. Thomas’ Church served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War.

Another historic landmark is the Exchange Hotel in Gordonsville. It was built in 1860 next to an important railroad junction. During the Civil War, it became part of Gordonsville Receiving Hospital, which cared for more than 23,000 sick and wounded people in less than a year. The building’s construction date and its later role as part of the hospital offer two distinct points of historical interest.

The Orange Train Station also combines architectural history with visitor services: the Colonial Revival building, constructed in 1910, houses the Orange County Visitors Center. Its opening hours may change, so check them before planning a visit. The ruins of Barboursville are preserved as a historic landmark among the vines at Barboursville Vineyards. The county’s historic sites are therefore varied: a train station, a commercial district, a former hospital, and preserved ruins.

Landscape, Cycling Routes, and Seasonal Planning

Orange County’s scenic cycling routes begin and end at the OCVA Visitor’s Center or the Historic Train Depot in downtown Orange. Route availability may change, so it’s worth checking the latest information before setting out. Another seasonal option is Corks and Caps, an annual beverage pass program in Orange County. It runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day; dates may change from year to year. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the year in question.

The places and activities mentioned offer specific themes to help guide your choices, without requiring you to combine them all in one visit.
