Exmore: Railroad History, Town Park, and Water Access
Accommodation in Exmore
Exmore offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: railroad history, historic buildings, Town Park, and boat and kayak access. Whether you’re more interested in historic architecture, outdoor recreation, or water activities, these different themes can help you plan your stay around your interests.
Railroad History in Exmore
Exmore was designated in 1884 as the first stop in Northampton County on the New York-Pennsylvania-Norfolk Railroad. Exmore Station is designated as station number X (10) on the NYP&N Eastern Shore line. The year, line name, and station number provide specific points of reference for the town’s railroad history.
The buildings also reflect different historical influences. The John W. Chandler House was built in 1890 in the Queen Anne style. Different features stand out at the Benjamin’s Department Store building: it is three stories tall, built of brick, and dates to around 1910. Exmore’s history can therefore be explored through both a specifically named architectural style and details such as height, building material, and an approximate date.
Railroad sidings known as “team tracks” were used at the M.J. Duer Packing House. Shippers and farmers loaded and unloaded freight cars there. This historic use adds the railroad’s role in freight transport to the information about the station and the railroad.
Town Park, Market, and September Festival
Exmore Town Park is a three-acre recreational space on Main Street. It is within walking distance of residential areas and shops in the town center. Amenities include picnic tables, grills, benches, and a large playground. Since park amenities can change, check these details before your visit.
The Exmore Mid-Shore Farmers Market is held at Town Park on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you’d like to plan your visit around it, confirm the date and location before you travel. The market and the park thus offer two different reasons to include the same named location in your day’s plans.
The Exmore Fall Festival is an annual celebration held in September. If you’d like to include it in your trip, confirm the specific date for the year in question separately. This lets you plan your visit to the event without relying solely on the recurring month.
Boat and Kayak Access
Morley’s Wharf on Occohannock Creek is a free boat ramp and a launch site for kayaks or canoes. Willis Wharf has 51 slips as well as a free public boat ramp and a free kayak ramp. The listed facilities therefore differ both in the ramps available and in the number of slips at Willis Wharf. You can use this information when considering what type of water access is relevant to your plans. Since facilities on the water can change, check the latest information before your visit.
Exmore offers several points of interest to help you choose a destination: historic buildings and railroad connections, recreation at Town Park, and designated boat and kayak access points. Which of these matter to you depends on what you’d like to do during your trip.
