The village of Lovingston is surrounded by mountains and farmland. Its history includes its original layout as the county seat in 1809 and several historic buildings. There’s also a Heritage Walk, food and drink offerings, and opportunities to enjoy nature near the Rockfish River. If you’re looking for a hotel in Lovingston, these specific features can help you decide whether the destination suits your travel interests.

History and Architecture

Lovingston was originally laid out in 1809 as the county seat in the geographic center of Nelson County. The Lovingston Historic District includes a courthouse dating to 1809 and a jail built in 1823 and designed by Thomas Jefferson. In total, the district encompasses 105 properties and 176 resources. The Nelson County Courthouse in Lovingston has five arches along its south front and an octagonal wooden cupola on its roof.

The Brick Tavern, also called the Stage Inn, is considered the oldest surviving tavern in Lovingston. The Federal Style Tavern/Ordinary at 633 Front Street was built in 1817; the Lovingston Methodist Episcopal Church at 632 Front Street was built between 1836 and 1838. Together with the 1809 courthouse and the 1823 jail, these construction dates span a period through the late 1830s. This makes it possible to distinguish the buildings by when they were built, rather than treating them as examples of the same era.

Heritage Walk and Tour

The Lovingston Heritage Walk starts in the center of town and covers about 1.5 miles. It takes approximately an hour and a half to complete. For planning your day, consider the two figures together: the distance describes the scope of the walk, while the approximate duration indicates how much time to allow. A tour of Lovingston’s sights is also available.

Food, Drink and Coffee

The Village of Lovingston Farmers Market promotes locally grown and sustainably produced food and serves as a gathering place for the local community. Lovingston is also a central starting point for exploring the Nelson 29 craft beverage trail, which includes wineries, breweries and distilleries. At Trager Brothers Coffee, visitors can enjoy freshly prepared espresso. The food and drink interests mentioned here range from the market and its community role to different types of beverage makers and a specific coffee option.

Nature Around Lovingston

Near Lovingston, the Rockfish River offers opportunities for kayaking and wildlife watching. These are two different ways to enjoy nature along the nearby river: an activity on the water and observing animals. Along with the mountains and farmland surrounding the village, they offer another perspective on the area beyond the history and architecture in town.
