Middlesex County: Maritime History and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Middlesex County
Middlesex County in Virginia brings together maritime themes, historic sites, and regional cuisine. As you plan your trip, consider whether seafood, boatbuilding history, colonial buildings, or nature should take center stage. These different themes can help guide you in shaping your trip around your interests.
Seafood and Regional Fisheries
Middlesex seafood markets sell fresh crabs, oysters, clams, scallops, and fish. Local fishermen catch these products in the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay. This theme puts both regional cuisine and the waterways and fisheries in focus. Selection can vary from market to market. If you are coming for a particular type of seafood, ask ahead about current availability.
Boatbuilding and Maritime History
The Deltaville Maritime Museum explores the region’s maritime history and boatbuilding tradition. The Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park share a 34-acre site, bringing together the museum and the outdoors. The site is near Jackson Creek, directly on the Chesapeake Bay. At Holly Point Nature Park, a walk leads through the woods along Mill Creek, with sculptures along the way.
Hands-on boatbuilding is also part of the program: during the annual Family Boatbuilding Week in July, participants can build a boat at the Deltaville Maritime Museum. Check the dates for the year of your visit before you travel. The museum also offers tours aboard the historic buyboat F.D. Crockett; ask ahead whether a tour is available on your dates. The Colonial Seaport Foundation offers educational programs on land and aboard a replica of an 18th-century coastal trading vessel. Check current participation options before you travel.
Colonial Buildings and Museums
The Old Middlesex County Courthouse is one of Virginia’s rare colonial courthouses. The James Mills Storehouse is a rare example of a colonial commercial building operated by a resident factor for a British company. Both sites offer a tangible architectural connection to colonial history, while museums explore other aspects of the county’s history.
The Urbanna Museum is housed in a brick building dating to around 1766, the last surviving Scottish Factor Store. The Mitchell map of 1755 is also housed there. The museum also displays artifacts, photographs, and models of historic boats associated with the oyster industry. The Middlesex County Museum dedicates exhibitions to Civil War soldiers and Lieutenant General Chesty Puller. The present-day building at Christ Church, Middlesex, dates to 1712.
Another way to explore the county’s history is the Middlesex Historic Marker Trail. It includes 16 historic markers and can be explored as a driving tour. This offers an alternative to visiting individual buildings and museums, with a tour that takes in several historic markers.
