In Leesburg, historic sites, cultural attractions, parks and cycling opportunities come together. When planning your trip, you can choose from a guided tour of downtown, cultural and historical themes, and outdoor trails. Each place and activity has its own focus, offering different perspectives on the town.

Historic Town Layout and Walking Tours

The Leesburg Historic District is arranged around a park-like courthouse square. It encompasses 36 blocks, with mostly tree-lined streets laid out in an approximate grid. Leesburg was founded in 1758; the Historic District includes buildings from three centuries. These details describe different historical layers: the town’s founding and the age range of the buildings in the district.

Tour Leesburg offers guided walking tours of downtown. The tours include historical and contemporary images, as well as an audio description of each site visited. This combines a shared walk through town with information about each stop. If you’re interested in Leesburg’s development, the tour offers a different perspective from looking at the street grid and buildings alone.

Cultural Attractions and Local History

Several sites have their own historical focus. The Thomas Balch Library is designated as a research center for the Underground Railroad. The Donaldson Log Cabin is maintained as an educational and interpretive site for visitors and residents, and is one of Leesburg’s oldest surviving log cabins. Its architecture offers a glimpse of early American frontier architecture. Dodona Manor is a house converted into a museum and associated with statesman and General George C. Marshall. Together, these sites represent different themes: from the Underground Railroad and early log cabin architecture to a house museum connected with Marshall.

The Loudoun Museum also offers a special insight: behind-the-scenes tours must be arranged in advance. If you’d like to include this option in your plans, be sure to make the necessary arrangements ahead of time.

Parks and Bike Trails

Morven Park is a 1,000-acre historic estate in Leesburg. Its grounds include lawns, fields, a wooded ridge and formal boxwood gardens. Ida Lee Park offers trails, playgrounds and open spaces. Leesburg’s parks therefore feature both varied landscapes and specific amenities.

The Leesburg Bike Trail Network includes more than 10 miles of shared-use paths, bike lanes and on-road bicycle routes; it also connects to the W&OD Trail. Two named routes differ in length and course: the Blue Trail is 7 miles long and runs from the W&OD Trail at Tuscarora Creek Park to a turnaround at Ball’s Bluff Road NE, near the entrance to Ball’s Bluff Regional Park. The Green Trail is 2.6 miles long. It runs from the W&OD Trail near Fox Ridge Park to the intersection of Battlefield Parkway and North King Street. When comparing the two routes, their lengths and endpoints offer different clues about each route.

Events Throughout the Year

Leesburg’s events include two annual arts and crafts shows at the Ida Lee Park Recreation Center. Summer JAMS is a free concert series presented by the town, held on most Saturdays from June to mid-August. The events therefore differ both in focus and in when they recur. As dates can change, check the current event schedule before your trip.
