Madison Heights: School History and the James River
Accommodation in Madison Heights
Madison Heights offers two very different starting points for planning a trip: the history of Madison Heights School and activities along the James River. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can consider whether you’re more interested in local educational history or would like to plan for paddling, cycling, and other river activities. These priorities lead to different questions about your stay.
School history in several stages
The Madison Heights Elementary School building was designed by W. Irving Dixon in the Georgian Revival style in 1939. Madison Heights School is an example of educational development during the Progressive Era. Here, Georgian Revival refers to the architectural style; Progressive Era places the school within a broader development in education. These are two distinct aspects: architectural design and educational history.
The first Madison Heights School high school building was constructed around 1924–1925; additions followed in 1930, 1934, and 1937. The 1939 design refers to the Madison Heights Elementary School building and should be distinguished from this sequence of additions.
During segregation, Madison Heights School served white students. Later, during desegregation, it became a “Freedom of Choice” school. The county closed the school in 1991. Its history thus encompasses both physical changes and a shift in its institutional role.
Activities along the James River
Riveredge Park is located in Madison Heights on the James River. The park offers bike trails, kayak and canoe rentals, as well as access for boats and fishing. James River Adventures is located in the park. The outfitter rents canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards by the hour.
A guided paddling trip is described as a one-hour round trip from Riveredge Park for up to 15 participants. Check whether a suitable time is available before making your plans. For rentals from James River Adventures, bookings and waivers must be completed online 24 hours before the rental. The trip and rentals therefore differ in their time structure: the guided trip lasts one hour, while rental equipment is offered by the hour.
For planning purposes, you can distinguish between the options by asking two questions: Would you like a guided trip with a stated duration, or is hourly rental a better fit for your schedule? The deadline for online bookings and waivers applies to rentals.
Hiking and cycling trails
The James River Heritage Trail is a paved trail for hiking and cycling. An access point in Amherst County is at the end of Fertilizer Road; access is via Central Virginia Training School. Riveredge Park also offers bike trails. The Heritage Trail can be distinguished from these as a paved trail for hiking and cycling with a named access point.
