Gloucester County: Archaeology, History and Parks
Accommodation in Gloucester County
In Gloucester County, historic buildings, Indigenous history and trails along the York River offer different perspectives on the region. Visitor attractions range from a museum collection and historic walking tours to park trails and hands-on archaeology.
History in Buildings and Collections
The Gloucester Museum of History is located in the Botetourt Building, which was built in 1770. The building was once an inn for travelers on their way to conduct business at Gloucester Courthouse. Today, it houses more than 3,000 objects, including archival documents, photographs and large historic agricultural equipment. Admission is free for all ages; check admission information before your trip.
Rosewell also tells the story of several eras. Construction of the mansion began in 1725. A fire destroyed the interior in 1916, but much of the masonry has survived. For 2026, the schedule for the Rosewell Visitor Center and ruins lists opening dates from April 3 through November 1: Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Confirm the schedule before your visit.
The Walter Reed Birthplace was built in 1821 and is a rare surviving example of a small, simple residence in the regional Tidewater Virginia style. The self-guided Historic Courthouse Circle Walking Tour offers another way to explore local history. The route includes the Colonial Courthouse, built in 1766, the debtor’s prison and former law offices.
Werowocomoco and Archaeology
Werowocomoco was an Indigenous town on the York River and served as a place for politics, ceremonies and trade for the peoples of Tidewater Virginia. The site remains closed while planning continues; check for possible updates before visiting. A dedicated exhibit room at the Gloucester County Visitor Center focuses on Werowocomoco. The exhibit is wheelchair accessible via a ramp.
Visitors who want to take part in archaeological work can try hands-on archaeology at Fairfield Archaeology Park and uncover stories from the past. The experiences differ: the museum features collection objects on display, while Fairfield offers hands-on engagement with archaeology.
Trails and Parks
Machicomoco State Park is in southern Gloucester County on the York River. It has the paved Moccasin Trail, which is 3.1 miles long and open to pedestrians and cyclists. Beaverdam Park also has designated hiking trails. The Moccasin Trail is designated for pedestrians and cyclists, while Beaverdam Park offers designated hiking trails.
For birdwatching, Woodville Park offers a variety of habitats: open fields, ponds and wooded trails. The birds you may see vary by season. There is also a self-guided interpretive walk along the York River. Near Tyndall’s Point Park, an interpretive trail features signs about the history of the surrounding area.
Gloucester County parks are open daily except on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day; check for possible seasonal closures before visiting. Swimming is permitted only in designated areas in the county’s parks and waterways.

The 2026 program included local art, crafts, specialty goods and food, with more than 250 vendors participating.
