History and Buildings
The Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District includes buildings from different eras and featuring a variety of architectural styles. The nationally known Newtown wagon was made in Stephens City and adds a famous local product to the area’s architectural heritage.
Despite numerous alterations and additions, Stone House retains much of its historic integrity. Its original southern section was built in the 1760s from locally quarried limestone and hand-hewn timbers. The northern addition was built from hand-hewn logs in 1786. The two sections therefore differ both in when they were built and in the materials used.
Trinity Lutheran was built at its current location in 1906 using many materials from the previous church building. The bell in the tower also links the present church to its past: it is the same bell that George W. Lemley donated for the former church building in 1812. Today’s Stephens City Methodist Church is a brick building built in 1913 in the Gothic Revival style.
