Historic Sites and Nature Trails

At Mabry Mill, a short trail offers views of historic buildings: the Mabry Mill Trail, also known as the Mountain Industry Trail, is an easy 0.5-mile route with good views. The mill’s history also includes the work of Ed Mabry and his wife Lizzy, who spent three decades grinding corn, sawing lumber, and doing blacksmithing there. Cultural demonstrations take place at Mabry Mill on summer and early fall weekends.

The trails at Rocky Knob vary considerably in length and difficulty. The easy Rocky Knob Picnic Loop is one mile long and loops around the picnic area. The moderate Black Ridge Trail is a 3.1-mile loop from the Rocky Knob Visitor Center over Black Ridge and Grassy Knoll and back to the Visitor Center. The Smart View Trail is a moderate 2.6-mile loop around the Smart View Recreation Area. For a longer, more challenging hike, the 10.8-mile Rock Castle Gorge Trail leads from the campground over the ridge and Rocky Knob into the gorge, then back to the campground. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
