If you’re looking for a hotel in Vienna, local attractions can help guide your travel plans: historic railroad sites, a trail through the center, walking paths, and events for special occasions. Consider whether you’re mainly interested in local history, plan to spend time outdoors, or want to coordinate your stay with an event date. The variety of places and activities can help you get to know Vienna as a destination.

Railroad History and Museums

The Freeman Store and Museum was built in 1859 as a two-story store and residence beside the Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire Railroad. It is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. The Vienna Depot was also built in 1859 by the Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire Railroad. The two buildings therefore date to the same year but served different functions: one was a store and residence beside the railroad, while the other was a depot.

The Little Library Museum tells a different part of the area’s history. The building was constructed in 1897 and served as Vienna’s first public library. It is also one of the oldest museums of its kind in Fairfax County. The museum has regular opening hours: it is open on the first Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m., as well as during special community events. These opening hours do not apply in January and February.

The waiting room at the Vienna Depot displays original Vienna signs and a scale HO model of the depot. The Northern Virginia Model Railroaders hold at least ten free open-house days per year at their depot in Vienna. Along with the historic buildings, the railroad models and the organization’s activities are also highlights. Check the specific open-house dates before your trip.

Trail and Walking Paths

The W&OD Trail runs through the center of Vienna along the former route of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad. The former railway is thus not only part of the area’s history but also shapes the route of today’s trail. It is open daily year-round from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. One access point in Vienna is via the Vienna Community Center parking lot; another is via the parking lot at the train station. Hours and access information may change, so it’s worth checking the latest details when planning a visit.

Southside Park has walking paths through wooded areas. The park is also the venue for Vienna’s annual July 4 fireworks; event details may change. Southside Park therefore offers two distinct reasons to visit: walking paths as a park feature and a recurring event on a specific date. If you’re planning your trip around the event, check the latest information.

Events Throughout the Year

The Church Street Holiday Stroll features live Christmas music. The town describes the Stroll as a long-standing tradition; event details may vary from year to year. Together with the July 4 fireworks, it gives an idea of the variety of events throughout the year: a summer date and an event with Christmas music. Make specific plans based on the latest dates, rather than relying solely on the recurring tradition.

Planning your stay means considering both recurring opening hours and access arrangements, as well as individual event dates. Check the latest information if you’re planning your trip around a museum visit, the W&OD Trail, or an event.
