Tappahannock on the Rappahannock River
Accommodation in Tappahannock
Tappahannock is a historic community on the banks of the Rappahannock River on the Middle Peninsula. A self-guided town tour, the Essex County Museum, and a variety of river activities offer different ways to explore. The nature trails of the Hutchinson Unit, west of Tappahannock, also offer a unique way to experience the area.
Town History and Museum
The self-guided historic town tour includes 13 historic buildings dating from 1680 to 1850. The Scots Arms Tavern dates to around 1680 and is considered the oldest building on the tour. Today, it is a private residence—a key distinction when considering the historic sites.
The Essex County Museum preserves the history and culture of the Rappahannock River. Through exhibitions and educational programs, it also introduces visitors to the river’s connection to the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Its collections span from prehistory to the present day. The “Rappahannock Voyage” exhibit includes a wooden rowing boat, boat models, a pictorial map of the river, oyster dredges, and artifacts and photographs from the steamboat era.
In the center of Tappahannock is the Max Silver Memorial Courtyard, an outdoor space used by residents and visitors. It extends the Essex County Museum and houses several informative exhibits. Many of the museum’s special events are also held there.
River, Parks, and Trails
On the Rappahannock River, Duke Street Beach offers swimming and relaxation on a sandy beach. A self-service kayak rental from Rent.Fun is also available there; availability may change. Central Park offers a different focus, with pickleball and tennis courts, a playground, and a splash pad.
West of Tappahannock, the Hutchinson Unit of the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge has several hiking trails. One trail follows a raised boardwalk through a wooded creek area. Another offers the chance to observe wildlife across the grasslands from an elevated viewing platform. The trails therefore differ not only in their routes, but also in the landscapes they explore.
At Mt. Landing Creek, the Hutchinson Unit has a fishing pier and a launch site for canoes and kayaks. A water trail also begins at a Unit pier on the creek. Rappahannock Roundstern offers trips departing from June Parker Marina in Tappahannock for fishing excursions, historic boat rides, and birdwatching on the Rappahannock River. Booking details may change; check them before your trip.
Market and Art
The Tappahannock Farmers Market takes place on the third Saturday of each month from April through October. If you’d like to plan your visit around it, check the dates before your trip. Offerings include local produce, artisan baked goods, meat, seafood, plants, crafts, and gifts. Available goods may vary by date and vendor.
The Tappahannock Artists’ Guild & Gallery is a venue for exhibitions, programs, and community engagement in the Chesapeake Bay region. Offerings include interactive art classes and free art activities for children during the farmers markets; program dates may change. The Guild also hosts a major annual plein-air event featuring the Chesapeake landscapes of Essex County. Check the event dates before your trip.
