Vergennes, Vermont, can be explored on foot, between historic sites, Otter Creek, and the Opera House. Several trails have different lengths and starting points. When choosing a hotel, it therefore matters whether you are planning a guided tour, a walk by the water, or an event.

History in the City

A published walking tour connects 42 historic sites in Vergennes. This number describes the entire route and does not mean that every stop can be visited during a short afternoon. Choose a section that suits your stay. The Vergennes Opera House was built in 1897 by and for the people of the city. It hosted musical and theatrical performances and reopened in 1997 with a sold-out performance by the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. For a concert today, check the current program and ticket availability, not the historic reopening.

Exploring Otter Creek

The trail in Falls Park is 1.5 miles long, follows Otter Creek out and back, and has an elevation gain of 66 feet. Parking is available at Falls Park. Another trail starts at the City Docks in Macdonough Park and leads up to the waterfalls. Don’t confuse the two starting points when choosing a hotel based on walking routes. The Outdoor Classroom trail is a one-mile loop with 52 feet of elevation gain. For cyclists, MacIntosh Bike Park has a 1.05-mile loop. Check current conditions and weather for each route you choose.

Choosing a Hotel Based on Your Plans

A downtown hotel may be convenient for the Opera House, while starting at Falls Park calls for a different location. Compare specific addresses, room conditions, prices, and availability. The existence of a bike park does not establish that a hotel offers bicycle storage, and proximity to Otter Creek does not mean you’ll have a water view from your room. With a clearly chosen route or event date, you can assess an offer on its merits.

County: Addison County.
