Ivins combines the landscape of neighboring Snow Canyon State Park with performing arts, festivals and public art. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering the natural attractions and cultural events as distinct highlights: for the former, the route and season matter; for the latter, the program and event date.

Scenery and Trails Around Ivins

Snow Canyon State Park lies directly along Ivins’ northern boundary. The 7,400-acre scenic park lies between lava flows and towering sandstone cliffs. These contrasting rock formations give the area a distinctive landscape. If you’re planning a hike, the park’s trail guides provide route descriptions, safety tips, information about notable features and the rules currently in effect. This lets you learn in advance about specific trails and their documented features.

Another way to get a sense of the park is the Snow Canyon Paved Loop: the 18-mile paved route is shared by cyclists, hikers, joggers and roller skaters. The information about shared use and length can help with planning; check with the park before your visit for current route and conditions information. This is especially useful if you’re planning to include a longer route in your itinerary.

Wildlife viewing also depends on the time of day and season. Coyotes, kit foxes, quail and roadrunners forage in Snow Canyon State Park at dawn and dusk. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. So if you’re hoping to see wildlife, dawn and dusk are good times to try, but there’s no guarantee.

Fire Lake Park covers just over 9 acres. The city’s plans for Fire Lake Park at Ivins Reservoir call for a water recreation area and nature park. Park maintenance is also part of the city’s plans: the park is to be maintained with consideration for waterfowl, other wildlife and neighboring property owners.

Stages and Cultural Program

Tuacahn Amphitheatre has 2,500 seats, and its adjoining theater has 425 seats. Both present Broadway musicals, concerts and other events. The amphitheatre also hosts outdoor concerts spanning all musical genres. The offerings described therefore include both major stage productions and concerts.

The Center for the Arts at Kayenta has a theater with more than 200 seats. Its program features a range of performing arts, including contemporary dance, plays and films. Each year, the Center produces and presents more than 50 events, with around 120 individual performances in theater, music, dance, storytelling and humanities lectures. The Center is located in Ivins, Utah, at 881 Coyote Gulch Court.

Festivals and Public Art

The Kayenta Arts District includes the Desert Rose Labyrinth and Sculpture Garden, Kayenta Art Village and the Center for the Arts at Kayenta. Public art displays may evolve over time. The Center’s annual program includes three public art festivals: the Street Painting Festival, Art in Kayenta in the fall and the Kayenta Native Arts Market in the spring.

Art In Kayenta is a free festival at Kayenta Art Village. It showcases works by more than 50 regional and national artists selected by a jury. Categories include painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, wood and metal. Participating artists and the mix of mediums may vary from year to year; the program and dates may also change annually. Check the details for the year of your trip.

Other public art projects take a range of forms and can be found at various locations in Ivins. It’s a Wrap is an ongoing art program in which selected utility boxes are covered with artist-designed vinyl wraps; individual installations may change. The Whitaker Wind Sculptures are a permanent art installation in the Unity District. Art on Loan, in turn, is an annual program by the Ivins City Arts Commission that displays local artwork in public places around the community. Exhibition details may change.

Plan a Market Visit

The Tuacahn Saturday Market takes place year-round every Saturday, weather permitting. It features local artwork, crafts, food and free entertainment. Since weather and operating details may affect your visit, check the date in advance if you’d like to include the market in your trip plans.
