Millard County offers a variety of options to help you plan your trip: cultural sites, trails, and natural attractions. Pahvant Valley extends across most of southeastern Millard County. It is part of the Great Basin physiographic region and is a broad, arid valley that runs north to south. If you’re looking for hotels in Millard County, you can choose based on the themes you’d like to explore during your stay.

Trails and Routes in the Region

The Pahvant Valley Heritage Trail combines driving routes with hiking trails and includes nine cultural and recreational attractions in Millard County. Most of its access points are on unpaved roads, where four-wheel drive is strongly recommended. Since road conditions can change seasonally, check them before setting out. The combination of driving routes and hiking trails makes this trail a different way to explore than a single route designed for just one mode of travel.

The High Desert Trail connects Millard County with other counties in western Utah: Box Elder, Tooele, Juab, Beaver, Iron, and Washington. It is suitable for off-highway vehicles, mountain bikes, hikers, and horseback riders. The West Desert Trails are in the western half of the county; their roads and trails lead to caves, rock formations, and wildlife-viewing areas. Many sections of the Paiute ATV Trail run through the eastern mountain area of Fish Lake National Forest, including numerous sections within Millard County.

Water, Scenery, and Wildlife

Gunnison Bend Reservoir has a public park with a boat launch, picnic tables, a covered pavilion, and restrooms. The availability of these facilities may change seasonally; check the details before your visit. A peninsula extending into the lake prevents large waves from forming, and the shallow water keeps the reservoir warm. These landscape features complement the practical information about the park without replacing details about its individual facilities.

Clear Lake Bird Refuge is south of Delta along Route 257. It consists of a series of small lakes and ponds that are heavily used by migratory waterfowl, as well as other birds and animals. If you’d like to include natural areas in your trip plans, this description offers a clear contrast with the county’s historic sites and trail-focused activities. The Snow Goose Festival takes place each February at Gunnison Bend Reservoir. Check the event dates before your trip.

Meadow Hot Springs consists of three distinct hot springs. The clear, calm water is about 100 degrees Fahrenheit and is home to warm-water fish. Meadow Hot Springs is privately owned; rules and access conditions may change. Confirm the current conditions before visiting.

Experience Local History

The Central Utah Relocation Center (Topaz) site now consists of two monuments, building foundations, roads, gravel paths, agricultural buildings, sections of the perimeter fence, and landscaped outdoor areas. The Topaz Museum presents the history of the 11,000 people of Japanese ancestry who were interned at Topaz during World War II. It does so through hundreds of artifacts, photographs, and first-person accounts, including 150 original works of art. The site and collection offer different ways to engage with the same historical subject: visible structural remains on the one hand, and museum interpretation on the other.

Cove Fort served as an important stop for travelers, the Pony Express, and telegraph lines from 1867 into the early 1880s. Visitors can see the garden, blacksmith shop, corral, barn, and bunkhouse. Fort Deseret offers a different type of historic structure: visitors can explore the remains of its enclosing walls and restored buildings. The fort is the only surviving example of the many adobe forts built in Utah.

Museums and Historic Buildings

The Great Basin Museum displays regional art, fossils, and history, and presents the history of the Fremont people in the local valleys. Tours and visits by special request are available during museum hours. Plan any such visit by request during those hours. The Territorial Statehouse State Park Museum is housed in Utah’s oldest surviving government building, adding a distinctive historic-building dimension to the county’s museums.

The places and activities vary in focus: options range from trails and scenic destinations to museums, preserved buildings, and a historic site. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you’d like to focus primarily on nature, trail activities, or history.
