Helper brings together several themes for trip planning: mining history, railroads, recurring cultural events, and river activities. The Helper Museum covers both regional history and life in the town; Riverwalk and the Price River offer different points of interest. The events also vary by season. First, you can decide whether cultural history, an event date, or river activities will be the main focus of your stay.

Museum and Mining History

The Helper Museum presents the mining history of Carbon County and the railroad that was central to the region. It also tells the story of life in Helper over the past century. The museum thus covers both regional themes and the town’s history.

The visitor experience includes oral accounts from people who witnessed local history, presented by curators and attendants. These add memories passed down orally to the historical themes. Big John also commemorates Helper’s mining history: the 18-foot-tall fiberglass statue depicts a miner and was created as an attraction in honor of that history. The accounts tell history orally; Big John vividly represents the mining theme with its miner figure.

Above Helper lies Spring Canyon, a ghost town where remnants of earlier mining are still visible in the canyon. It offers a distinct perspective on Helper’s mining past alongside the museum’s themes. Check current access conditions before visiting.

Riverwalk and the Price River

The Helper Riverwalk runs through downtown and begins behind the museum’s outdoor mining exhibit. Its starting point connects exploring downtown with a direct link to mining history. The Riverwalk can therefore be included as a distinct focus when exploring Helper.

The Price River runs through Helper and Price and has several access points for fishing and river trips. This is a different way to experience the river from the Riverwalk, which runs through downtown. Since water conditions can vary, it is advisable to check current conditions before planning an outing.

Cultural Events and When to Visit

Founded in 1994, the Helper Arts Festival became an annual tradition. Every August, it fills Historic Main Street with artists, musicians, filmmakers, families, and visitors from across the region. If you’re planning your stay around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

First Fridays take place from April through October and offer an opportunity to explore the town’s shops and galleries. They differ in timing from the Arts Festival, which is focused on August: the two types of events offer different clues for choosing when to travel.
