Water, nature and history offer different ways to experience Willacy County. Activities on the water take center stage around Port Mansfield, while Raymondville’s historic courthouse and county museum offer a cultural perspective on the region. Wetlands, coastal landscapes and local events also contribute to the county’s character.

Port Mansfield: Waterways and Activities

The 12.9-mile Mansfield Channel is an access route to Port Mansfield designed for vessels with shallow drafts. It connects the Gulf of Mexico with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and is used by recreational boats as well as for commercial barge traffic. At the same time, the channel forms the southern boundary of Padre Island National Seashore immediately south of Port Mansfield. For visitors interested in the town’s maritime setting, it offers a tangible connection between the waterway, port town and coast.

The shallow, sheltered waters of the bay at Port Mansfield are suitable for windsurfing and sailboarding, as well as kayaking and canoeing. From the harbor, fishing is possible in small boats, while wading, from shore, or at public fishing piers. Public facilities may change; before making plans, check whether your preferred fishing option is available during your visit. The Gulf of Mexico is a nine-mile boat ride from Port Mansfield.

Laguna Madre offers a different perspective on the coastal waters: its shallow waters are rich in fish, shrimp and crabs. It is one of only six hypersaline lagoon or bay systems worldwide. Dolphins can be spotted on boat trips in Laguna Madre near Port Mansfield, though sightings vary. The area around town is also interesting for wildlife watching: the densely vegetated, sparsely populated brushland offers opportunities to spot deer, turkeys, quail and nilgai antelope.

Visitors interested in guided wildlife viewing can join bird- and wildlife-watching tours on local private ranches by appointment. Experienced field guides lead the tours. Confirm availability and dates locally before basing your plans on them.

Wetlands, Trails and Coastal Landscapes

The Las Palomas WMA extends across Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties. Of its 18 wildlife management units, nine are open to public use: Anacua, Arroyo Colorado, Baird, Carricitos, Chapote, Ebony, Longoria, Taormina and Tucker. Within the WMA in Willacy County, visitors will find Tamaulipan thornscrub, grassland, agricultural land and wetlands. The different habitats help illustrate the area’s range of landscapes.

The individual units also differ in what they offer visitors: the Longoria Unit has an accessible hiking trail, while the Anacua Unit has designated walking paths. The Port Mansfield Nature Trail passes through coastal grasslands and tidal flats. Along the Gulf Coast in Willacy County, sandy and saline or cracked soils support plants such as cordgrasses, seashore saltgrass and marsh millet.

Courthouse, Museum and History

The Willacy County Courthouse, completed in 1923, stands in Raymondville. The three-story brick building is designed in the Classical Revival style and features light cast-stone ornamentation. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017 and is also a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Visitors interested in architecture can appreciate both the building’s design and its two historic designations.

The Willacy County Historical Museum is located at 427 S 7th St, Raymondville, Texas 78580. Its collection includes items from the Mifflin Kenedy family: bedroom furniture, artwork, and windows and doors from his home. The collection also includes a bulletproof vest worn by Mifflin Kenedy. These specific objects offer museum visitors a personal, tangible connection to regional history.

Another historical connection is South Padre Island, which lies within the present-day boundaries of Willacy County. A fleet of twenty ships was wrecked off the island in 1554. The Texas Tropical Trail also runs through Willacy County, offering another way to explore the region. The Port Mansfield Nature Trail and this regional route represent different ways to discover the landscape and the area.

In addition to its historical attractions, Raymondville also has a nine-hole golf course.
