Jonestown on Lake Travis

Jonestown is located in the Texas Hill Country on the north shore of Lake Travis. Depending on whether you’re primarily interested in getting out on the water or want to include parks and landscape features, different aspects of the town come to the fore.

Boating and Marina

Jones Brothers Park is on Lake Travis and offers access to boating. Three public boat ramps are available for launching boats; their use depends on water levels and local operating conditions. If boating is a central part of your trip, factor these conditions into your plans for the day. The park also includes a walking trail. This brings together two distinct interests: access to the water by boat and the opportunity to explore the park on foot. Check conditions in advance if a ramp is essential to your plans.

Northshore Marina is a public marina on Lake Travis that welcomes boaters from Jonestown. It has four boat fueling stations and a pump-out station. This adds another set of facilities for boaters to the public ramps at Jones Brothers Park. If you need one of these facilities for your plans, check the marina’s current information in advance.

Trails and Park Features

The parks also offer different experiences on foot. Jones Brothers Park has a walking trail; the Canyonlands Trail can be accessed from Fireman's Park via stairs. The main difference for planning purposes is the type of access: a walking trail in the park on one hand, and stair access to the trail on the other. The stairs are a specific planning consideration if you want to include the Canyonlands Trail.

Fireman's Park was established and built by the Jonestown Volunteer Fire Department. Its origins give the park a specific connection to the community. It also has a large barbecue pit. Park amenities can change; check current information if you’re counting on this feature during your visit.

Trees, Creek, and Surrounding Region

Shady Park has a group of large oak trees. Pecan Park is next to Big Sandy Creek, which flows only intermittently, and has a group of mature pecan trees. The difference between the landscape features is clear: Shady Park is characterized by its oaks, while Pecan Park combines pecan trees with a creek that flows only intermittently. This lets you distinguish between the two parks based on specific features rather than treating them as interchangeable stops.

The 27,500-acre Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is also located in the area around Jonestown. The refuge broadens the regional perspective beyond Lake Travis and the features of individual parks. Your trip planning can therefore account for two distinct areas: Jonestown, with its north shore, boating opportunities, and parks, and a large wildlife refuge in the surrounding area.
