Friona: Cheeseburger Tradition and Pioneer History
Accommodation in Friona
Friona combines a cheeseburger tradition with the history of its early community. A practical distinction can help with your travel plans: Would you like to schedule your days around a recurring event date, or focus on local history? The festivals, Friona City Park, and the Parmer County Pioneer Heritage Museum offer different ways to explore the area.
Cheeseburger Tradition and Events
The first Cheeseburger Festival and Cookoff was held in 2006. In June 2007, Governor Rick Perry officially declared Friona the “Cheeseburger Capital of Texas.” Visitors can sample specialty cheeseburgers at six official cheeseburger stations. Participating businesses and services may change; check in advance to see which stations are currently participating.
The Cheeseburger Festival takes place every year on the third Saturday in July from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The annual Cook-Off includes live music, vendor booths, and a car show. Dates and program details may change; if your trip depends on the festival, check the information for the relevant year before you travel.
Other recurring events include Maize Days, an annual parade and celebration, and Christmas In The Park. The program includes vendor booths, parade entries, and visits with Santa for children. Details of annual events may change.
Friona City Park and Local History
Friona City Park has a pavilion and a playground for children and adults. The Santa Fe Depot Building is also located in the park; it was moved there from its former site beside the railroad tracks to the center of the park. The City of Friona historical marker is in the park at the intersection of South Main Street and East 8th Street. If the marker’s precise location matters for your visit, check it on site. The park amenities, depot building, and marker thus share the same named point of reference.
The Friona community was founded in 1898 by the XIT Ranch. In its early years, the community served as a shipping point on the newly built Pecos & Northern Railroad. In 1907, the Union Congregational Church became Friona’s first church. These milestones illustrate different aspects of the early community: its founding, its role as a shipping point, and its first church.
The Parmer County Pioneer Heritage Museum displays objects significant to local pioneer history. It is housed in an adobe building constructed after the 1921 fire. These reference points can be put in chronological order: the community was founded in 1898, followed by the first church in 1907; the museum building was constructed after the 1921 fire. This brings early local history together with a later point in the area’s architectural history.
A Practical Resource
The Friona Public Library has computers available for projects and research. If you plan to set aside time for your own research during your trip, it offers an additional local resource alongside the historic sites and events.
