Discover Castroville’s History and Nature
Accommodation in Castroville
Castroville offers several points of interest for travelers interested in history and outdoor activities. Historical highlights include homes, churches, and historic sites; Castroville Regional Park offers a different focus, with cycling, jogging, hiking, and a butterfly garden.
Historic Sites and Immigration History
On the grounds of the Landmark Inn, 27 people founded the European-influenced village of Castroville on September 3, 1844. The Landmark Inn State Historic Site covers five acres and is situated beneath tall trees along the Medina River. On the riverbank, the Landmark Inn tells the story of migration, industry, and preservation in Texas. This brings the specific founding of the town and broader themes of Texas history together in one place.
The Biry-Ahr Property is home to the Castro Colonies Living History Center. The Biry house is an example of early Alsatian immigrant architecture. Immigration history is reflected in different ways: in the center’s name, which references the Castro Colonies, and in the architectural classification of the Biry house.
Churches and Architectural History
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded on January 29, 1852. Construction of the church building began in 1853; congregation members provided stone, sand, and lumber. In 1857, Pastor Oefinger held Castroville’s first public school classes in the church building. Together, these events trace the story from the founding of the congregation to construction and early public education. The current church building of St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville was built in 1870. That year refers to the current building; at Zion, the dates mark the congregation’s founding, the start of construction, and the school classes.
Buildings and Historical Perspectives
Castroville’s Historic Walking Tour includes more than 50 homes and commercial buildings originally built in the mid-to-late 19th century. Castroville also has 96 so-called settlement or pioneer homes and structures dating from 1844 to 1920. The time periods offer different perspectives: the tour focuses on 19th-century homes and commercial buildings, while the settlement and pioneer period extends through 1920.
The sequence of dates underscores the long historical arc: Castroville’s founding in 1844 was followed by the founding of a church congregation and the start of construction in the 1850s; the current St. Louis building dates to 1870. The settlement and pioneer period extends through 1920.
