Discover Hewitt: Parks, Library, and Railroad History
Accommodation in Hewitt
If you are considering Hewitt as a travel destination, you can get to know the city through three distinct points of interest: its parks along Castleman Creek, the Hewitt Public Library, and the Hewitt Depot. For planning your stay, you can explore outdoor activities, reading resources, and local railroad history.
Parks and Time Outdoors
Hewitt Park is located along Castleman Creek. Its amenities include a 0.5-mile loop trail and a picnic area. The Adventure Playground offers children opportunities to climb and play; the Hewitt Disc Golf Course is laid out according to PDGA rules. The loop trail provides a specified distance; picnicking, climbing and playing, and disc golf give the park a range of uses.
Warren Park is just off Old Temple Road and on the banks of Castleman Creek. Its amenities include playgrounds and a covered pavilion. If you compare the two parks based on the specific amenities listed, Hewitt Park has the loop trail with its stated length, the picnic area, and the disc golf course; Warren Park is noted for its playgrounds and pavilion.
Library and Reading Resources
The Hewitt Public Library is also open to people who live outside Hewitt city limits. Visitors can apply for a library card with a valid form of identification and proof of their current address. Library cardholders can borrow passes to select local museums for seven days. The library is therefore not limited to Hewitt residents; borrowing museum passes requires a library card.
Another offering is “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.” It promotes reading and parent-child bonding and is intended for newborns, infants, and toddlers. You can register at the Hewitt Public Library’s front desk or using an internet-enabled device. Participants can take home library backpacks with preselected books. The offerings have different eligibility requirements: the library is open to people from outside the area, borrowing museum passes requires a library card, and the reading program has its own registration options.
Railroad History in Hewitt
Hewitt was founded in 1882, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad built the section of track between Hillsboro and Taylor. Hewitt was named after George A. Hewitt, a railroad executive. The founding year and the naming tell two different parts of the city’s history: the construction of the rail line and the origin of the city’s name.
The Hewitt Depot is located at the corner of 3rd Street and Warren and has been extensively renovated. The Greater Hewitt Chamber of Commerce currently operates out of the depot.
Reading, Movement, and Time Outdoors
On Saturday, March 21, 2026, the StoryWalk was introduced at its opening celebration as an offering that combines reading, movement, and time outdoors. The offerings have different focuses: the library program combines early literacy with parent-child bonding, while the StoryWalk was introduced as a way to bring reading, movement, and time outdoors together.
