Llano: Granite Landscapes, Rivers and Festivals
Accommodation in Llano
The Llano Uplift is a 5,000-square-mile central mineral region with some of the oldest rocks in Texas, distinctive minerals and rock formations. Enchanted Rock is one of the region’s major granite domes. For visitors interested in landscapes and geology, it offers a striking thread to follow on a trip: from pink granite to the rocks featured in exhibits at the Llano Museum.
Granite Landscapes and Archaeological Sites
At Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, a massive pink granite dome rises above Central Texas. The area lies on Big Sandy Creek, on the border between Gillespie and Llano counties. More than 400 archaeological sites have been found there; 120 are designated State Archaeological Landmarks. The park’s geological features therefore sit alongside an equally remarkable archaeological dimension.
The Llano River is also known for its geology: it contains small amounts of gold, topaz and garnets, as well as the rare Llanite granite. Visitors can wade in the river and try their luck panning for gold at several public access points. Check access and river conditions before visiting. In the town of Llano, the river also offers opportunities for swimming, tubing and kayaking, as well as peaceful relaxation in nature.
Water, Trails and Nature
At Inks Lake State Park, swimming, boating, water skiing, scuba diving, fishing and paddling take center stage. There is a large no-wake zone for paddling. The water level is usually steady, allowing for year-round recreational activities, though temporary advisories may still apply. Options range from calm paddling areas to more active water sports.
Five good boat ramps are spread across the two shores of Lake Buchanan: four are on the east shore and one on the west shore. Their availability may change with water conditions, so it’s a good idea to check the latest status before visiting. For those planning a hike instead, Falls Creek Hike offers a different focus: the trail passes through typical Texas Hill Country scenery to a seasonal waterfall and a natural swimming area. Waterfall conditions are best after rain.
Grenwelge County Park offers opportunities for swimming and kayaking year-round. Every spring, the park also hosts the Llano Earth Art Festival. Another natural retreat is Horseshoe Bay Nature Park: this ecological preserve encompasses eight zones, and trails wind through a variety of Texas Hill Country habitats. In Llano County, places away from urban light pollution offer good conditions for stargazing, including Inks Lake, Enchanted Rock, Robinson Park and remote ranch roads. Local light and weather conditions vary.
Museum, Regional Cuisine and Events
The Llano Museum features exhibits on regional crafts, rocks from the Llano area—including Llanite and granite—and local military history. Exhibits may change. For a culinary highlight, visit Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que in Llano, known for Texas cowboy-style barbecue cooked over mesquite charcoal.
The events calendar features festivals with a range of themes. Llano Oktoberfest is held annually at the Llano Fine Arts Guild and features traditional foods, local and German beers, and live music. The 2026 edition is scheduled for October 10 and 11. Llano County also holds annual festivals, parades and celebrations, including AquaBoom at Lake LBJ and the Llano Crawfish Open. Dates and programs may change; check the details if you’re planning your trip around an event.
Rodeos are also part of the events lineup: a covered arena in Llano hosts traditional annual rodeos. These include team roping competitions at the Crawfish Open in April, the Llano Open Pro Rodeo in June and youth rodeos throughout the year. For an experience on the water, Awesome Bowfishing offers guided bowfishing tours on Lake LBJ in Llano County.
Black Rock Park is also located on Lake Buchanan, with a shallow swimming cove, fishing spots, mini golf, kayak rentals, RV sites and waterfront accommodations. As offerings may change, check the details before your visit. The range of options—from a park visit and a guided tour to a festival—lets you give your Llano trip a variety of focuses.
