Jones County in Texas is not a single city location for a hotel search. Anson offers historic buildings and a museum; Fort Phantom Hill and the reservoir of the same name are other destinations in the county. When choosing a hotel for a visit, first determine whether the trip is to Anson, a fort, or a body of water. A listing for Jones County does not establish room availability, a view, or a short distance to all of these places.

Anson as a Cultural Destination

Anson is located at the intersection of US Highways 83/277 and 180. The Jones County Courthouse was completed in 1910 in the Beaux-Arts style. The Anson Opera House dates from 1907 and has served over the course of its history as a venue for theater, Chautauqua productions, silent films, and other gatherings. These details describe its construction and use history, not a current performance schedule. For a stay focused on the historic center, a precise hotel location in Anson is more informative than the county name.

The Anson Jones Museum is located at 1300 Avenue K in the former First Presbyterian Church building. The church building was constructed in 1929 and turned over to the city for use as a museum. The collection includes a desk and chair used by Dr. Anson Jones in his medical practice. The museum thus brings together the history of a building and a person. However, a museum listing does not replace current opening hours.

The Anson Post Office contains a mural by Jenne Magafan depicting the historic “Cowboy Dance.” The Texas Cowboys’ Christmas Ball has been held as a three-day event since 1940; it and Pioneer Hall are designated as a historic event and a historic site of the state, respectively. This establishes tradition and recognition, but not a current event date. Anyone traveling specifically for the ball needs the calendar for the current edition.

Distinguishing the Forts Trail and Water Destinations

Fort Phantom Hill is located in what is now Jones County. The Texas Forts Trail also passes through the county; the entire driving route is about 650 miles long and connects historic forts in West Central Texas. This length refers to the complete regional tour, not a drive within the county. A hotel in Anson is not automatically an ideal base for every section of the route.

Thompson Creek rises west of Anson and is impounded downstream to form Anson North Lake. Fort Phantom Hill Reservoir is a different, 4,246-acre impoundment on Elm Creek. White bass and palmetto bass are listed as fishing opportunities there. The two bodies of water should not be confused; the presence of fish does not imply public shoreline access, current fishing rights, or boats at the hotel.

For an urban focus, the more precise location page leads to Anson. The county page can help with the initial geographic choice. The actual hotel decision then depends on a specific offer, its address, and its documented amenities—whether the trip is for the museum, historic forts, or a water destination.
