Hidalgo: Nature, Birdwatching and Culture
Accommodation in Hidalgo
Estero Llano Grande State Park is located on the southern edge of Weslaco in Hidalgo County. Together with a birding expert, the park offers guided tours where you can observe some of the 340 bird species recorded there. This makes birdwatching one of the specific experiences you can use to shape your travel plans.
Birdwatching and distinctive landscapes
Other places also offer different settings for nature observation. Edinburg World Birding Center is a 40-acre wetland oasis where wildlife can be observed year-round. A rare subtropical landscape shapes the nature experience at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors can visit the Observation Tower and the Canopy Bridge there.
At La Sal del Rey, a striking landscape and an exceptional feature of the lake come together: La Sal del Rey is hypersaline and ten times saltier than the ocean. At the same time, the area is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Those interested in the relationship between landscape and wildlife will find a different focus here than in targeted birdwatching or at the Edinburg wetland.
The World Birding Center offers another regional perspective. Across the wider area, this network connects nine distinct birdwatching sites along a 120-mile historic river road. Participants include the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Rio Grande Valley communities and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Trails for different activities
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park offers seven miles of trails for cycling or walking. This includes 3.5 miles of park road—exactly half of the stated total distance. This lets you put the length of the trails and the proportion made up by the park road directly into context, without treating different trail offerings as equivalent.
Old Hidalgo Pump House Museum also offers walking and cycling trails. Hidalgo County’s Hike & Bike Recreation Trail is located at 724 Breyfogle Road in Mission, Texas. These details help distinguish the offerings: a park with designated trails, paths at the museum and a trail with a specific address are different points of reference for planning.
Architecture, museums and events
Quinta Mazatlan brings together nature and culture: the Spanish Revival mansion was built in 1935, and its 20-acre grounds are Tamaulipan Thornforest. Quinta Mazatlan is also a sanctuary and retreat that connects people with the history, beauty and wonder of nature. The mansion’s construction date and the landscape of the grounds offer two different perspectives on this place.
At the Museum of South Texas History, the Old Jail was built in 1910 and remains an important part of the museum. The Museum of South Texas History collects, preserves and presents materials about the distinctive history and cultural heritage of the lower Rio Grande region, South Texas and northeastern Mexico. Mission Historical Museum has a narrower regional focus: it shares the history of Mission and western Hidalgo County through exhibitions, programs and research opportunities.
At the International Museum of Art & Science in McAllen, art galleries feature works from the permanent collection as well as seasonal exhibitions. On the grounds, the Rio Sendero winds through the sculpture garden. The BioZone complements the art and exhibitions with hands-on science activities and experiments that visitors can do on their own. A museum visit can therefore bring together art, a walk through the sculpture garden and hands-on science.
Two event offerings differ considerably: Borderfest takes place annually in Hidalgo, Texas, and features cultural performances and international cuisine. Guided trolley tours at Old Hidalgo Pump House Museum are offered on the third Tuesday of each month for $5.00; additional dates are available by advance reservation. Check the Borderfest dates and the appropriate tour date before your trip.
