For a stay in Nixon, local history, historic markers and trails, music, and a special hunting opportunity can each provide a different focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Nixon, it helps to clarify the purpose of your trip: will the city’s history be the deciding factor, or are you planning around a concert or a specific hunting opportunity? For concert and hunting plans, check current dates and conditions in advance.

Nixon: Railroad and Church History

Nixon was founded in 1906, when a railroad line was built through John Nixon’s ranch. The town was initially known as Nixonville; later, the name was shortened to Nixon. First Baptist Church of Nixon has its own, older timeline: it was founded in 1869 as a mission of the San Antonio Baptist Association. Its congregation moved from Rancho to Nixon in 1907.

These are three dates for different events: the founding of the mission in 1869, the founding of Nixon in 1906, and the congregation’s move in 1907. The sequence shows that the church’s history began before the town was founded, and that the congregation moved to Nixon later.

Markers and Historic Trails

A historic marker commemorating Nixon’s founding is located on Highway 80 in the Nixon post office parking lot. A completed stone wall with six picture markers about the town’s founding stands right beside it. Another 57 picture markers have also been installed at various locations in Nixon. This means there is both a specifically located installation at the post office and picture markers at different places around town.

The historic trails can also be distinguished by their routes. Rancho Road, a branch of the Chisholm Trail, runs through the western part of Nixon. The old Indianola Trail runs from east to west through the southern part of town. Rancho Road is therefore associated with the west, while the description of the Indianola Trail also specifies its east-to-west direction.

Live Music and the Camp House

Camp House Concerts is a medium-sized outdoor venue in Nixon. It primarily hosts live concerts featuring country, blues, and singer-songwriter music. The Camp House was built sometime in the early 20th century.
