Fairfield: Find hotels for your trip
Accommodation in Fairfield
Fairfield brings together the history of Freestone County, the Freestone County Fair and Rodeo held each June, and outdoor recreation. This gives you different ways to plan your visit: you can focus on historical topics, the fair program, or parks and sports facilities.
County history in Fairfield
Fairfield was originally called Mound Prairie and was designated the county seat of Freestone County in 1850. The town’s history is also reflected in its historic buildings: the Freestone County Courthouse was built in the Classical Revival style in 1919. The 1881 Freestone County Jail is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and was restored to its 1880s appearance from 2012 to 2021. The Val Verde Cannon is also a historic marker in Fairfield.
Local history encompasses several topics: the town’s former name, its designation as the county seat, and its architectural heritage. If you are interested in family history, the Freestone County Genealogy Research Library offers another way to explore this subject. There, you can access photographs, family history records, books, newspaper microfilms, and school yearbooks. The yearbooks include editions from the 1940s. Images, family records, and printed collections are therefore available as different types of historical sources.
Fair program in June
The Freestone County Fair and Rodeo is held every June. The program includes an opening parade, horseshoe and washer tournaments, carnival rides, a pageant, livestock judging, live music, and youth and adult rodeos. The Freestone County Fair Association showcases the work of local 4-H, FCCLA, and FFA exhibitors.
During the fair, the Go Texan Games are held on three evenings at the Backstop and Show Arena. Both the multi-day games and the other program events are part of what the event has to offer. If you plan to visit for the fair, check the latest dates before you travel, as schedules can change.
Parks and outdoor activities
Fairfield City Park offers opportunities for sports, nature experiences, and playground visits. At the City of Fairfield Kiddie Park, visitors can enjoy a scenic walking trail with their pets. Check local conditions before visiting. Water comes into play on the FTX Disc Golf Course, where trees shape the fairways on the front half of the course. These options offer different kinds of experiences: park activities, a walk with pets, and disc golf with the course features described above.
Planning your visit to Fairfield
The road network is also part of Fairfield’s geographic setting: the town is at the junction of Interstate Highway 45, US Highways 75 and 84, and Farm Roads 27, 488, and 1580. You can consider this location when planning your trip alongside the reason for your visit. County history, the seasonal fair program, and outdoor activities offer different perspectives on Fairfield; which one matters most to you depends on what you want to focus on during your stay.
