Schulenburg’s cultural themes range from model-aircraft and local history to Painted Churches tours in the area. The museums focus on different subjects: technological development, family history, the local past, and polka in Texas. There is also a walking trail at the Schulenburg Sports Complex and the intersection of Interstate 10, U.S. Highway 77, and Farm Road 1579. You can plan your stay around the topics that interest you most.

Museums and Historic Sites

The hangar at the Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum houses interactive exhibits and 30 static displays about Joseph and Victor Stanzel’s contributions to the development and manufacture of model aircraft. Development and manufacturing together provide the museum’s thematic framework. The presentation combines technical content with the history of the two individuals named.

The Schulenburg Historical Museum displays historical artifacts and events relating to Schulenburg’s development and the way of life of its ancestors. It is located in the former Wolters Mercantile, a building constructed in the early 20th century.

The Stanzel museum complex also includes the restored historic home of Victor and Joe Stanzel’s grandparents. It is furnished as it would have been in the late 19th century. The house adds a family and domestic perspective to the history of model aircraft.

The Stanzel Brothers Factory Museum showcases the original 1935 manufacturing building of the Victor Stanzel Company. The year it was built gives the historic factory building a specific point of reference in time.

The Texas Polka Music Museum focuses on a different cultural theme: its exhibits cover instruments, bands, photographs, and costumes related to the history of polka in Texas. The range of topics thus extends beyond local and business history to a music theme at the state level.

Wolter’s Cabin was moved to Schulenburg’s then-newly established park in 1941 and still stands there today. Local business history also has a dated milestone: the first Kountry Bakery opened in Schulenburg on Highway 77 in 1979.

Painted Churches: Two Tour Options

On a self-guided Painted Churches tour in the Schulenburg area, you can visit four of the area’s six churches. Guided tours of the Painted Churches in the Schulenburg area are offered year-round, Monday through Saturday, except on certain holidays and Catholic holidays. Check these exceptions before planning your visit.

The two tour options also differ in their planning details: for the self-guided tour, the focus is on the number of churches; for guided tours, it is the days of the week offered and the exceptions. Use these differences to decide which option fits your schedule.

Getting Around and Walking Trail

A report from May 2019 describes a walking trail about half a mile long at the Schulenburg Sports Complex. If you plan to use it, check its current condition before your visit.
