Falls County can be explored through the Brazos River and the history of its communities. The river crosses the center of the county, while rolling Blackland Prairie also shapes the landscape. At the Falls of the Brazos River, you can see how a natural river crossing once influenced travel and navigation. In Marlin, the courthouse, historic homes and churches tell stories of architectural and community history. You can plan your stay around the landscape, architecture or local heritage.

The Brazos River and the Falls

The Falls of the Brazos River formed a natural crossing for travelers on the frontier of the time. In the 19th century, their rapids also marked the limit of steamboat traffic on the river. In 1866, the Brazos River changed course, moving the fall line to its present location. The Falls served as a landmark for Indigenous groups and early settlers. These stories show how the river’s course and rapids shaped travel and navigation in different eras.

Today, a county park at the Falls extends along both sides of the river. From Marlin, the Falls are accessible via FM 712; it is about five miles to the Brazos River’s east bank in the park. The Brazos River flows through the center of Falls County, where the rolling Blackland Prairie creates a different landscape. McLennan’s Bluff, once known as “Sugar Loaf,” rises above Pond Creek and served as a landmark for early settlers.

Architecture and Local History in Marlin

The Falls County Courthouse in Marlin is an Art Moderne-style building. Highlands Mansion was built by B. C. Clark around 1898–1900. At the turn of the 20th century, it was considered one of Texas’s showplaces. Its approximate construction date and historical significance give the house a distinct place in the county’s architectural history.

The Buck Farmhouse features a gable-front-and-wing layout in the Folk Victorian style. It was built using balloon-frame construction and combines Queen Anne and Greek Revival influences. James Bayliss Buck Farmstead is considered the best-preserved example of the original agricultural settlement that once supported the Travis community. The Henslee House brings together a remodeled Victorian home and architectural elements of the Shingle style. Built in 1880, the Falconer Home originally housed the private Stafford Military Academy for boys.

Community, Remembrance and Faith

The Falls County Historical Museum features exhibits on the cultural, social and economic contributions that shaped the region. On the grounds of the Old Settlers and Veterans Association stands a historic log cabin containing mementos of the pioneers. In 1912, the Association acquired a 17.9-acre site intended to serve as a permanent reunion ground. The museum and log cabin offer different ways to explore regional history: exhibits on community contributions and mementos from pioneer life.

The Marlin Missionary Baptist Church was the county’s earliest African American congregation. In 1882, Rev. Nelson T. Denson became the first elected Black official in the county. The history of the First Baptist Church of Marlin also goes back a long way: it began on April 10, 1852, with ten founding members; early services were held in the log courthouse. The first sermon in a new church building was delivered in 1929. The First United Methodist Church of Marlin was completed in 1910 and remains in use. Bricks made from red clay from the bed of the Brazos River were used in its construction.

The “May Day Singing” has been held annually at Blue Ridge Baptist Church since 1887. Only the cemetery and church buildings remain of the historic Stranger community; the church buildings were used for semiannual homecoming events. Check in advance to see whether an event is scheduled. Union Cemetery contains more than 800 graves, including those of early settlers and their descendants, as well as veterans of several wars.
