New Braunfels offers three distinct points of interest to consider when planning your trip: trails and parks, water activities, and German-influenced history and culture. When looking for a hotel in New Braunfels, you can consider which focus you want to shape your days of travel around.

Parks, Trails and Natural Areas

Fischer Park spans 62 acres on a hilltop. More than two miles of greenway trails wind through the grounds; there are also two fishing ponds, a water play area, playgrounds and the Nature Education Center. More than 30 acres of the park are preserved as native prairie. This brings open natural areas and a range of recreational spaces together in one park.

The free, interactive Paleontology Dig is located in the Nature Education Center. Visitors can dig up and explore dinosaur fossils in the sand. This activity adds a hands-on look at paleontology to the park’s focus on nature.

The Dry Comal Creek Trail is a 2.25-mile loop through a variety of habitats, including wooded savannas and areas along the creek. The trail is open to hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers. This distinguishes it from Panther Canyon in Landa Park: there are several trail options there, while the Dry Comal Creek Trail is described as a loop.

Landa Park covers 51 acres and offers numerous amenities beneath the shade of large oak trees. Panther Canyon is within the park. Landa Park officially opened to the public in 1936—a historical reference point for this park area.

Springs and Water Activities

Comal Springs are located in Landa Park and are considered the largest springs in Texas and the southwestern United States. The Comal River is spring-fed and suitable for tubing. Its water temperature stays between 70 and 72 °F year-round; conditions on the river can vary.

Fischer Park also offers activities on the water: you can rent kayaks at the Rent Fun kiosk from morning until evening. Since availability can change, it’s best to check before your visit.

German-Influenced History and Culture

Downtown New Braunfels features 19th-century architecture influenced by German styles. The Central New Braunfels Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known for its history and culture of German immigrants. These two aspects give the city’s history a clear cultural connection, without limiting a visit to a single building.

Visitors can take self-guided walking tours through the Downtown New Braunfels Historic District and the Gruene Historic District. If you’re planning a tour, check the current offerings in advance. Wurstfest is an annual celebration featuring German culture, food, music, dancing, carnival rides and games, beer, and Alpine- and Bavarian-style entertainment. For trip planning, it’s worth checking the event dates.
