Terlingua: History, Chili, and Desert Parks
Accommodation in Terlingua
Terlingua is located outside the western entrance to Big Bend National Park. When planning your stay, you can weigh different priorities: the town’s mining history, recurring chili events, or activities in Big Bend Ranch State Park. Historic buildings and ruins, the annual traditions at the Cemetery, and offerings centered on the parks and river corridor each provide their own setting for these themes.
Historic District and Mining History
The collection of buildings and ruins in Terlingua forms the town’s own historic district. The Terlingua Historic District is listed on the National Register. Individual sites also reflect the mining history: the Starlight Theatre once served as a theater for Terlingua miners, and the Chisos Mining Company employed hundreds of miners in the area. The original Chisos Mine store in Terlingua Ghost Town is now home to the Terlingua Trading Company.
Marked graves at the Terlingua Cemetery date back to 1903. The site is also the setting each year for a tradition associated with Mexico’s Día de los Muertos: it is transformed into a colorful scene of flowers, candles, and paper garlands. The historic graves and the annual decorations represent different aspects of the Cemetery—its long history and a recurring cultural event.
The Painted Feather Gallery is also located in Terlingua Ghost Town. Together with the buildings and ruins of the historic district, it contributes to a townscape whose cultural themes you can explore through several named sites.
Visiting Big Bend Ranch State Park
The Barton Warnock Visitor Center is the eastern entrance to Big Bend Ranch State Park. It includes a two-acre garden featuring plants of the Chihuahuan Desert. Visitors can obtain permits at the center for backpacking, camping, and river use. If you’re interested in the area’s nature and outdoor activities, the visitor center offers both a garden and practical visitor services.
The Rio Grande, or Rio Bravo, corridor in Big Bend Ranch State Park offers opportunities for rafting, canoeing, picnicking, and fishing. Big Bend Boating & Hiking Company is one of the official providers of guided tours for the state park and has an address in Terlingua. Since provider details can change, it’s a good idea to check them before planning.
Desert Sports continues to rent mountain bikes at its Terlingua store. Guided tours, boat rentals, and shuttles have been suspended since May 31, 2025. These details distinguish the ongoing mountain bike rentals from the three suspended services and may be relevant when choosing your activities.
Chili Events and Musical Tradition
The CASI Terlingua International Chili Championship takes place at Rancho CASI de los Chisos, north of Highway 170 in Terlingua. The annual five-day celebration begins on the Tuesday before the event weekend and ends on Saturday. The public is welcome to take part in the competitions from Tuesday through Friday. If you want to include this event in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.
Another chili event held annually in Terlingua is the Original Terlingua International Championship Chili Cookoff. The two events have different names and should not be confused when planning.
The Terlingua Music Bash also draws on a local musical tradition: annual visits by musicians led to nighttime music sessions under the moon. The Music Bash also includes a silent auction, with proceeds supporting a local arts scholarship. So, in addition to music, the event supports local initiatives. Which historic sites, park activities, or recurring events you prioritize can shape your stay in Terlingua.
