Rivers and forests as a reason to visit

Angel Falls is a Class IV rapid on the Big South Fork River. Scott State Forest is entirely surrounded by the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area; the John Muir Trail runs along the river corridor on its eastern side. Angel Falls is a single rapid, while the John Muir Trail offers a distinct nature-focused experience centered on the river. You can plan your visit around either a specific river feature or a trail.

Access to Scott State Forest is via Leatherwood Ford Road, also known as Highway 297, and connecting county roads. The associated public road map was last updated in April 2026. Check the road map before you travel.
