Morgan County: Nature, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Morgan County
Morgan County is home to Frozen Head State Park, whose landscape shapes the county’s outdoor character. Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area encompasses more than 24,000 acres of wilderness. The park is named after a 3,324-foot peak in the Cumberland Mountains. For travelers planning to spend time in nature and go hiking, Frozen Head is a specific highlight of their stay.
Hiking Trails by Length and Difficulty
Two sections of the Cumberland Trail can be compared by length and difficulty. The Frozen Head State Park section is a challenging 7.9-mile route; the Emory Tract is moderate and 3.1 miles long. The lengths show the difference in scope, while the ratings offer further guidance when choosing a route. Trail conditions and access may change. Check the latest information before your visit.
The Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail runs 36.5 miles through Morgan County. The trail as a whole is more than 300 miles long; Wartburg is the only town it passes directly through. The two distances describe different scales: the section through Morgan County and the entire trail. This makes it possible to distinguish the local route from the full trail.
Wartburg and the Barkley Marathons
The Barkley Marathons take place every year in Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg. The course is more than 100 miles long and consists of five loops. This identifies the recurring venue as well as the course’s length and format. If you are planning your trip around the race, check the organizer’s information in advance, as race details may be revised.
Wartburg is also home to Wartburg Presbyterian Church. Built in 1883, it is a fine example of the Folk Victorian style. The construction date and architectural classification offer two different points of reference for exploring local history: the year places the building in time, while the style describes its architecture.

Morgan County’s oldest surviving residence is open to visitors and shares its history on site. Ezra Stonecipher built it in 1814–1815. He was a gunsmith and furniture maker from a family of German immigrants. Its historical significance therefore encompasses the age of the house as well as its builder’s occupation and family background.
