Marion County: Gorges, Trails, and History
Accommodation in Marion County
In southeastern Tennessee, Marion County combines impressive natural scenery with local museums and historic sites. The Tennessee River Gorge, trails, and Nickajack Lake shape the outdoor side of a trip; in South Pittsburg and Jasper, museums, a theater, and local traditions are among the highlights.
Nature Between Gorge and River
Prentice Cooper State Forest is located in Marion County along the scenic Tennessee River Gorge. It has 35 miles of trails and includes the southern section of the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail. This natural area offers both forest paths and a section of this long-distance trail.
A special natural site is Sequatchie Cave, a 133-acre natural area in Marion County. It is one of only two known sites worldwide for the federally endangered Royal Snail (Marstonia ogmorhaphe). This rare distribution makes protecting the small snail a notable aspect of the area's natural history.
Nickajack Lake is another of Marion County's distinctive landscapes: a scenic, 46-mile stretch of the Tennessee River. Activities associated with Nickajack Lake include kayaking, bass and catfish fishing, and boating. This stretch of river offers a different focus from the trails through gorges and forests.
Trails, Climbing, and Other Activities
Activities at Prentice Cooper State Forest include birdwatching, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, and horseback riding. OHV use is restricted to designated areas; hunting is also among the listed activities. Fiery Gizzard Trail is managed by South Cumberland State Park. Its features include streams, waterfalls, rocky gorges, and sweeping panoramic views.
For a shorter hike, the route to the base of Foster Falls is a 0.6-mile round trip. It has a moderate incline, rocky sections, and a suspension bridge over Little Gizzard Creek. Little Cedar Mountain Loop is 3.4 miles long and offers views of Nickajack Lake. At Snooper’s Rock, a 5.9-mile round-trip route follows the Cumberland Trail; shorter routes are also possible. Snooper’s Rock offers panoramic views of the Tennessee River Gorge.
The route descriptions refer to different types of hikes: Foster Falls is listed as an out-and-back, Little Cedar Mountain as a loop, and Snooper’s Rock also as an out-and-back. Pot Point Loop is more than 11 miles long and runs through the Tennessee River Gorge. Short Creek - Mullens Creek Loop passes through challenging, uneven terrain. Its regular stream crossings can vary with the season.
Denny Cove, part of South Cumberland State Park in Marion County, has approximately 150 climbing routes. Adventure Off Road Park and Nature Center covers more than 600 acres and has over 120 off-road trails, with difficulty levels ranging from easy to extreme. The trail inventory may change over time.
Museums, Stages, and Memorials
South Pittsburg brings together historic sites and local culture. Chapel on the Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Pittsburg Historic District. It can be used for weddings, receptions, family reunions, and award ceremonies; confirm availability before making plans. The Princess Theatre has been a landmark in the local community since the silent-film era.
South Pittsburg Heritage Museum displays hundreds of historically significant local objects. These include old photographs, a gas stove made in South Pittsburg in the 1920s, and locally made cast-iron cookware. Jasper Museum of History features, among other things, Civil War artifacts and traditional quilts. These collections tell local history in different ways: through everyday objects and images as well as historic textiles and wartime relics.
The Children’s Holocaust Memorial centers on an authentic German railcar and a display of eleven million paper clips. The Paper Clip Project offers self-guided and student-led tours. An exhibition at South Cumberland State Park, announced on March 10, 2025, and titled “Condemned to Labor: Convict Leasing and the Lone Rock Stockade,” explores the history of Lone Rock Stockade and so-called convict leasing. Check whether the exhibition is currently on view before visiting.
Marion County Veterans Memorial Park honors veterans of all wars and peacetime service. As part of the region's transportation history, Marion Memorial Bridge connected Chattanooga and Jasper along the western section of the historic Dixie Highway.
Local Traditions and Trip Planning
The National Cornbread Festival takes place every year on the last full weekend in April in South Pittsburg. As part of the festival, Cornbread Alley features tastings of various cornbread recipes. If your trip depends on the festival, check current event dates before making plans.
When choosing when to travel, you can give different priority to nature, culture, and events: the trails and landscapes make up an outing in their own right, while museums and memorials offer additional stops for history enthusiasts. The festival adds a seasonal highlight in April. This makes it possible to explore Marion County through the specific places and experiences that suit your travel plans.
